When I called VZW last week to ask about the Storm, I was told by the rep that there was a 10MB limit on the $29.99 plan and that the $44.99 unlimited plan would be better for me with a BB.

That contradicted everything that I've read here on Crackberry. I had understood that the $45 plan was for BES, i.e. connecting through a coporate server, and the $30 plan was for everyone else, with a cap of 5GB/month.

I've been lurking here for several months, since the run up to the curve release, and I tend to believe what I read here over a sales rep.

Iam a VZW sales rep and I can assure you that the only difference is that the $29.99 plan is for the BIS, and the $44.99 plan is for the BES (Corporate).

Neither have a 5gb cap. The cap is for 3 things ONLY tethering, overseas data use, and a broadband card.

Both plans have unlimited internet with up to 10 email addresses. I hope this helps to clear things up a bit.

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions at all

So - if I want to get my work email on my BB and I am able to do that from the phone would I still need the BIS plan? Would it be best to check with the IT at my office?

because i use tethering, it was cheaper according to my rep for me to go with the 44.99 plan since i get a corp discount through my work.

if you want your work email then you need the 44.99 bes plan. also your IT dept will have to add you to their server.

Its best to check with IT before changing the plan

Thanks vzw8706! That's exactly what I thought (except for the 5GB limit). Perhaps the rep I spoke with was confused, or just didn't know. Over the years I've been nothing but happy with VZ when I called. Everyone I spoke with was friendly and knowledgeable. That's why I was so surprised with the contradiction I heard.

    I appreciate the clarification.

No problem. I've been doing this for a number or years now, and I can see how all the different options can be confusing to the new reps.

Especially since VZW just recently went on a hiring spree

So, on the $29.99 plan, I can tether to my laptop, for up to 5 GB a month, at no extra charge? Also - I currently have the America's Choice family plan, 500 minutes, $50.00 for the first user, $9.99 for the second. With the new Storm that I've ordered, will that go away, since the least expensive family plan now seems to be the 700 minute version, at $69.99 for the first two users? (The two of us don't use anything near 500 minutes a month during peak time.)

No, Tethering is at an additional charge

    $29.99 plan + $30 tethering = $59.99
    $44.99 plan + $15 tethering = $59.99
    Broadband card = $59.99

VZW wants the tethering plans to remain a consistent price throught the many data options

And yes when you order the storm you have to be on a current plan. The lowest is the $69.99 700 min plan for 2 lines that you mentioned

That's what I thought. I am a sales rep for Best Buy Mobile. When I activate customers for their BlackBerry Storms, eros automatically adds the $44.99 data plan. Unless they changed it on us without notifying us, I thought the $29.99 plan only gave the customer 10 MB of usage (which would be a rip).

No, there was an old plan for $24.99 for 10mb of usage. (can no longer add)

The $29.99 definetly has unlimited data.

And yes, it defaults to the $44.99 for us too unless we change it

Usually the $44.99 would auto add. I suppose because if you needed BES, you wouldn't have an issue if there was a mistake in getting your email up and running. The plans would have to be switched manually to make sure the customer is getting $29.99 data plan.

Also thought i'd share, there IS a $24.99 BIS data plan for BB that DOES have a 10 MB Allowance. I recommend the $29.99, because its unlimited for $5 more, what's $5 when you don't have to worry about data overage?

Just as a note...always make sure you are on the correct data plan because of this auto add.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers!

As of Nov 14, 2008 you can no longer add the $24.99 plan to any "new" device. So that counts the Storm out. Any device VZW offered before 11/14/08 can take advantage of the 24.99 plan if they wish.

Minimum of $29.99 for the Storm however

That is correct. I just thought i'd throw it out there since it was previously mentioned. Although a bit irrelevant on a Storm thread, still good to have info for anyone watching that is a pre storm BB owner.

    Thanks for the correction though.

I have the $29.99 plan and Tethering is an additonal $15. I just called CS to confirm my plan and prices.

vzw8706, can you comment on people being able to get BIS tethering for $15? For $15 I might think about tethering, $30 is too much for me.

just one comment and one question.

Comment: u do not need BES for work email if your e-mail is web based as well. I get mine completely flawless and my work email is also web based as it is with many corporations

Question: I was told that tethering would cost me 15$ extra because BES is required and then another 15$ extra for the tethering which makes it 30$ in total on top of the 29.99 u start out with (assuming u started with unlimited BIS.) Can someone verify this as this seems to be pretty freakin steep for tethering with a 5mb limit!

maybe i'm missing something, but when i'm looking at the nationwide plans i only see the $79 and $99 plans (bis and bes). what are the $29 and $44 plans you are referring to?

The $29 and 44 are not plans, but data packages that must be added to a BB device. This is in addition to whatever plan you choose.

No you do not. if you have the email&web plan for 29.99 you are paying 30 dollars for the tethering. Pm me your # and i will verify for you. (corporate VZW sales rep here)
