For a while now, my Storm has been acting weird, I only use four applications which i have downloaded from the App World, and they each take up less then a megabyte, but the phone keeps telling me I'm running low on Application Memory. Today, I erased all the data with the Desktop Software, and my phone seems to have been completely reset, but then I tried to update the operating system to 5.0.0.841, again with the Desktop Software (it told me this would take up 27 MB). Eventually the updating stops and i get:
"There is not enough storage space on your device for this update. 5MB is required to install the update."
I have a 8 GB Media Card installed, and the device memory with 879 MB free, so I really don't understand why this is happen. How can I fix it?

when you look at memory, you need to look at Application Memory free space. It should be the first item in the list.
Removing items with DM may not free up your memory. Check the application memory, do a battery pull and then recheck the application memory. I think that will fix your issue.
before the battery pull i had 17.3 MB free, afterwards 24.6 . if i remember correctly the update required 27 MB free. How can this be possible? The only programs i have installed are BBM, Whatsapp, and a screenshot application. How much is the Storm's memory is dedicated to Applications?
App memory of 24.6 is not too bad, but with only a few apps installed I would have expected to see more. Do you have a ton of email and text messages saved to your phone? If so, you can try deleting what is not needed.
You should be able to install a new OS. Are you sure you are following the correct procedures?
Rather than use DM, try using AppLoader. You can find it on your computer at:
Program Files/Common Files/Research in Motion/AppLoader then double click on the Loader.exe file
Hey I don't want to hijack the OP"s thread but I've finally managed to update the OS of my mates storm, but there's only 36mb of free application memory. Is this normal?

I used the App Loader (thanks for the tip) but I don't think I updated to the lastest version (5.0.0.841). Right now i'm running 5.0.0.451. Is it the latest one available?
There are several leaked versions from China that are available, 871 and 973.
Did you download 871 and install to your computer? If so, then delete any other OS versions you have installed on your computer. If not, then you need to download it and install it to your computer to get it to install.
Be sure to delete them by going through Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Also be sure to delete the Vendor file before installing.
AppLoader should find the most recent version installed on your computer and load it.
