Does anyone know what this means? It has drastically affected my contacts in that either nothing displays at all or, if I manually add a name to the contact list, it displays that name 90 times along with half of my contacts.

I started getting the message after using PocketMac to purge the data from my BB.

    Help.

well apparently you have a NULL field in the contact database where there shouldn't be one. But I'm no help re: pocketmac.

Enable your debug log and run through the process that generates the exception. After that go back to the event log and copy it and email it to yourself. Post it here and I will take a look. Once you have done that dont forget to set the event log back to warning or whatever it was set to before.

I agree. I didn't have nearly this many problems until I tried to purge my contacts through PocketMac. I ended up using Missing Sync and have a fully restored and working BB.

See my post below for info on that if you're interested.

    mtbighorn,

thanks for the offer to help. being the impatient guy i am (and working with a net...more on that in a minute), i just decided to try wiping my BB using the device option under Security. Once I did that, I tried reloading my contacts through Missing Sync and that worked. While I had to go back and redo all my ringtones and customizations, I ended up with a fully functional BB inside of an hour.

As for the working with a net comment...my BB developed a black spot on the screen by the end of the first day I got it (release day). I took it back to my Verizon guy and showed him and he told me he's swap it out one-for-one when they got some in sometime in early December.

He followed-up with me last night to see if the spot was still there so he could set me up to get a new one. When I told him it was, he told me I could keep using it or bring it in for a "loaner phone" until my new BB came in...now looking like mid-December. I told him I'd keep it and he advised me no knock myself out learning how to use it. As long as it's not physically damaged when I bring it back, I'm good to go. Consequently, I'm pressing every button and using every option I can because this one is bound for the Verizon re-furb bin.

    I dig Verizon customer service.

    Cheers!!

Glad to hear you got it working, cant help but laugh though as the common theme in my industry is if all else fails try again.

The definition of insanity is repeating the same processes expecting different results.

well.. I came across this today as well..

with syncing using missing sync. I am not sure if missing sync is causing it. I did some major contact upgrades before it happened.

However before doing the wipe device I dug deep into everything I could think of.

Completely removing anything about contacts on the device did not solve the error.

I ended up going with the wipe device feature to fix it just to see if it would fix it.

It did fix the problem. However short of wiping device or reloading the OS which isn't hard either way. I was still looking for a easier fix..

I couldn't find it but if it happens again I will definitely try a few other things.

I get the same error as the OP when I try to search my contacts (by holding down my finger on a name and having it highlight the name).

It doesn't do it EVERY time I try this but, most times. Here's the event from the log. I've looked through it and it's not obvious to me what's causing the error.

    Anyone else have a thought?

I had this problem occur on my mac when trying to sync my contacts through missing sync. I was also running an app on my BB called WhatsApp which was causing the error. I removed the WhatsApp app and now all seems to work OK.

when you have uncaught exception:java.lang.NullPointerException ,that is mean you have downloaded an app that is not compatible with the OS of your BB. Delete it, give a good reboot an then you will be ok. Feel free to pin me if you want.

I got the dreaded java.lang.nullPointer exception error message when attempting to use SMS messaging. I have a Blackberry Bold 9700. The solution was to connect the BlackBerry to the computer, and in the BlackBerry software, back up your device data, then go into Restore on the left side pull down menu. Selecte the "Select Device Data and Settings" button, then click the SMS Messages box. Click the Restore button.

This solved the problem. At least for now. I imagine it would work for the same error message for other kinds of java.lang.nullpointer exception errors, too.
