Unless there is something new here, I'm afraid that is incorrect. Both my daughter and her boyfriend have Blackberry Curves (8320) and neither one has a data plan or BIS. Granted, they can't surf the net, but phone calls and texting work perfectly for them, though I will admit, it is a rare event when I actually see them use the BB as a phone. 99.999999999% of the time all they do is text each other or their friends.
