I just did a software update and now I have a strange symbol right under the time. It is a 1 with a white arrow inside a little black circle and a red * in the upper right corner of the black circle? Any idea as to what this is?

its an app that you have downloaded via app world that has an update available. You can check your "messages" folder and open app world to see.
