All blackberries have a magnet in them, it is a magnetic switch so it knows when it is put in an licensed holster. There is a corresponding magnet in licensed holsters that pulls the switch which puts the device into standby mode(powersave mode)

My curve also has a magnet at the top, where the speaker is. There is no magnet where the case would shut it off, as least none that I know of or can detect.

1. The speaker is the magnet (i.e. has a magnet as a component).
2. AFAIK, you don't need a magnet to detect a magnetic field. I doubt that BBs use a magnet to detect the sleep magnet on cases.
I agree it would have to be a sensor in the phone that the magnet on the case interacts with, a hall sensor. We use them on rc helicopters to read rpms and they are very accurate and precise.

This aspect constitutes every blackberry I have ever used. Now if it was strong enough to pick up tools when working on my car, that would be a different story.
