A friend has an iPhone 3G, we ran the Speed Test app by Xtreme Labs. He gets 2000kbits/sec download and I get 400kbits/sec. What gives????

    I'm not impressed.

i just ran mine and this is the highest I have ever seen on my phone. download 522 and upload 390.

2000 would be nice. should the network technology be turned on to 1xev? it's on global right now. Whats the difference between these options?
    04-02-09 08:18 PM
  11. graspDESIGN's Avatar
Leaving it on Global mean that if you were out of the country the phone would be able to search and roam on GSM networks. This does not affect the data speed while in the states at all.

It will save battery though from what I hear if you were to just switch it to 1xEV, that is if you are using it in the states only. You can always just switch it back to global if you do travel though.

My speeds have always been between 300-490kbps. I think I'd fall over if I saw 2000kbps.

What speeds "should" we be seeing?

The reason is that HSDPA 3G is faster than CDMA 1XEVDO Rev A. Both are technically a "3G" service, it's just that HSDPA has the faster speeds.

So, that commercial about being the "fastest 3G network" is a lie.

Its all wording. AT&T claims they have the most coverage in the most ares. However, AT&T has been rated one of the WORST when it comes to phone coverage and phone call drops.

It depends a lot on location. Some cities have faster networks.

VZW claimes to be the largest and most reliable 3g service. ... its att that claims to be the fastest. there was a article on a site i saw recently that gave att the slight edge in speed when averaged over many cities throughout the US. Of course you wont notice the difference between 800 kbps or 1200 kbps loading most sites!

2 - Scroll down to "CNET TOOLS" select Bandwidth Meter
3 - Enter area code & select wireless as your connection
    4 - click "GO"

the thing you need to consider is that the network saturation and traffic in your area, enviornmental interference, etc...they will all impact service. if you're getting THAT slow i'd call VZW and file a trouble ticket and have them research it further...might be a network issue in your area, might be your device's radio is damaged...but can't hurt to try.
