I have a Vodafone UK Storm and I am quite happy with it.
Most of the time I use it in the Portrait mode, but when I start using it, for example when I take it out from my pocket, it is always in the Landscape mode and it takes a few seconds, and sometime even more than that, to switch to the Portrait mode. Is it possible to choose the default mode so that it starts always in the Portrait mode? Oddly,even when the screen is locked, it changes mode .

Nope it probably will never be an option either. Just wait for the updates it will make the lag almost no existent.

No over in the states we just got a new updated version of the OS (.83) and the lag is almost non existent. It used to drive me crazy though, but now I don't really notice it because it's so fast.

I hope a new OS will be available soon for the 9500 and solve this problem. Thanks
