    Problem:
My phone is password protected. Ive decided that this is a pain in the *** so i'd like to turn off this pw feature.

Under options->password there is a Password field with a drop box for Enable /Disable. The problem here is that there is a little red lock next to the option and i can NOT toggle enable to disabled. No idea why! Pls advise!

Is it on a BES account or is it a personal phone? Also, do you synch with multiple PC's?

Sounds like there's an IT policy enabled on the device. It can happen from time to time when you synch with two different PC's. I am not sure why this happens, but it does.

    Remove IT Policy - BlackBerryFAQ

is the only way I know of the remove it.

As soon as i get it turned on, the 'Enter New Password' dialog prompt is up.. and sure enough a quick check of the options has the stupid lock next to the password again!! argh

    OK EVERYBODY

    Here is the scoop

Under Memory, if you have Encryption Mode set to 'Security Password' then you CANNOT disable the password field. FYI!

    argh.
