How do I stop some apps from starting up? Like bb messenger.. I never use it..

Uninstall it via Blackberry Desktop.

remember ... some apps won't close just by clicking the back button... like google maps... you actually have to go to the menu and select 'exit'
also... some apps run in the background (i.e. viigo) you have to go to the options and select not to run in the background once is closed...
every app is different... but most of them you can just close by holding down the back button...
