Bottom line is that the jury is out -- except for CX and others in the know which doesn't include me -- regarding whether the 9520 has GPS. I hope to find out soon as my decision time for whether to "trade" my 9530 for a 9520 (albeit with an ETF and a wait for the 9520) expires 1/24/09 (since I purchased my 9530 from Beast Buy). In the meantime, pointless to speculate. I'm sure CX will tell us when he can.

Having 3G is no aditional cost, of course not, I ain't stupid. But using 3G is.. and AT&T f.e. offers contracts with a monthly cost (20 bucks a month), so u can use your 3G network unlimitedly.. Here in belgium, there's no such option. If you connect to the 3G network, you pay 7O cents for every five minutes you're on it.

My understanding is that the original 9500/9530 didn't ship with wifi for 2 reasons. 1) It wasn't something VZW/Voda wanted. Enough there alone to not get it included but 2) wifi is an absolute battery hog. I prefer NOT having it because that one time when I forget to turn off the wifi radio, I can forget about not having to charging my battery that night. I threw the backlight down to 10% on mine (still easily legible outdoors and indoors) and i can pull 2.5-3 days out of mine on OS .83 under moderate non-mutimedia use.

OMG!!!! Reading this thread has made my day. Haven't had such a good long sustained laugh in awhile. This whole wifi/no wifi, "The Network" thing is hilarious.
I love the Storm with or without Wifi, but that's just me. I have access to wifi at home but when I'm there I'm on my computer. The places I go to don't have wifi so it's not that big of a deal to me and definitely not a deal breaker. Don't get me wrong here, it would be awesome to have wifi, but I could care less. Also I'm not just some person who's defending not having wifi because I already bought the 9530. I'm just laying it out as it is, FOR ME. I know bigger and better things are in the pipeline. I can wait. I'll enjoy my 9530 while I have it and then when I get a new phone I'll enjoy that, whether if that phone is a Storm or not.
Did anyone see that Engadget article with Verizon saying that they will start deploying LTE near the end of next year instead of sometime in 2010? I think it would be pretty awesome if the next Storm was LTE capable.
I was also thinking that when Verizon, AT&T, T-Mo all go to LTE, that there would be no real comparison like there is now. We'll have less people yelling, "we have The Network," or crap like that. I think when it's all LTE it'll all really boil down to each companies business practices that gets it customers. LTE should really even up the playing field.
So, CX, what say you on the 9520 being used on T-Mo's 3G? Can you tell us or perhaps do you know if more info will be leaked soon?

| | Blackberry Storm Wi-fi
I've been adamant about this for a while now - I really think that the possibility of a 9520 Storm with Wi-Fi is pretty unrealistic, if one were to take RIM's CEO at his word. If such a device were to be released, it would most likely be crippled in other areas. Plus the exclusivity of the Storm with certain carriers is very much just like AT&T's exclusivity over the iPhone.
"Lazaridis also defended the decision to release the BlackBerry Storm without Wi-Fi, limiting users to a 3G connection. “We tried,” he said. “When you’re engineering something, you try to get as much as you can into the product, and we just couldn’t [add Wi-Fi].”
He said that the decision came down to a question of space. “We have 3D tools that allow us to pack every available millimetre. There’s no room left. The speaker is here, the antenna radiation field is there, then you have the camera, the flash, the microphone, the head set, there’s just no room left in there,” he said.
Lazaridis believes that people won’t be put off, despite the decision receiving criticism from some quarters: “3G coverage is pretty ubiquitous and I think that it runs really fast. Think of it this way: Many of us buy a device like this and just expect it to work everywhere. Even people with Wi-Fi don’t always set it up to work in their home, or business. You still need the 3G connection to make phone calls. You still need it to get your SMS and MMS.”
“We went after those things that people needed: high quality camera, flash, multimedia support, big screen, small size, big battery,” Lazaridis said."

WIFI ... the Storm is first a phone to me. Can't use WIFI. Second, I usually like to do things around work, no WIFI there. At home, I have my PC, no need for WIFI. Glad the 9520 is coming, the commitment for the Storm is great. No WIFI is still not a deal breaker to move back to AT&T. The memory is still etched in my mind of the bad service. Maybe that's why all the AT&T folks really like WIFI ....

You know the real question that should be asked is, Has anyone been able to unlock the wi-fi that is on the storm from verizon because it has to be there, the reason why it has to be there is because they haven't gone though a massive change in hardware, plus the specs on the BB website also say it has a wi-fi chip in there to... some how it is locked in the system but that doesn't stop someone from unlocking it.
