I have my gmail account set up with html turned on and download images to yes. However when I check my mail there are only boxes for images and I have to hit the BB button and select get images for every email.
Is there any way to have it get images automatically?

No. Its too much of a security risk. The pictures have to be downloaded and RIM will ask every time to make sure to trust the site that sent them to you.
