does any one know what software would be good for converting to mp4 from vob files. free would be nice

I think Super will do it and it's free! If not, it's a nice tool to have for other conversions. I just don't have a VOB file on this pc to test right now):

might be right about that...

I have Vista on my other PC and I don't use it for video stuff for that very reason.
