Is there anyway to change the background of icons?
I see they're black, but i'd like to make them transperent (or even yet, change them on an individual basis).
Anyone know how to achieve this task?

That's theme related. The stock theme, the icons/background are black. You can check through the themes threads to find a theme that you like that includes transparent icons in Applications/Landscape mode. Or, if you're really adventurous, you can download Plazmic and try building your own.
