To buy a Storm or not
- Hey guys and gals, I was told about this site yesterday after telling a friend that I was interested in getting a Storm. After reading ALOT in these forums I learned alot about it. It seems that most of you guys really enjoy your Storm.
I have seen complaints of locking screens, cameras not working as well as expected, and other little annoying things. So here is my question. Should I purchase a Storm now or would it be better to wait for another version when the kinks are ironed out?
I figured I'd go to the people that know for a truthful answer. Thanks02-13-09 11:32 AMLike 0 - I think it all depends on how you deal with minor kinks. If they'll annoy you to the point of wishing you'd never gotten the phone then maybe hold off for a bit longer. Then again, annoyances are specific to the user, so there's no guarantee they'll ever iron everything out.
Personally I'd say go for it, it's well worth it. I've gone with the .99 OS and it's working great, my camera is better, don't have any lockups or issues now. yeah there are some minor annoyances, but nothing I don't expect or can't deal with.02-13-09 11:37 AMLike 0 - If its for personal use i'd say go for it. its going to get better pretty soon with a new OS update that should happen in the near future. Its pretty awesome and IMO definitely better than the iphone.
That being said, I have a curve and can't get a storm before they iron out the kinks because I rely too much on it working pretty perfectly for work.02-13-09 11:39 AMLike 0 - Hey guys and gals, I was told about this site yesterday after telling a friend that I was interested in getting a Storm. Are your into "techie" things?
Do you like installing OS updates on your PC and experimenting with new processes and programs?
If not you might want to wait a month or so untill you hear that an official new release above 4.7.0.75 OS has released on the Storm. As it (.75) has a few issues that can annoy.
If you like to play and want to get involved in all the downloading, installing and configuring of OS and apps on the Storm then jump in. Verizon has a buy one get one free deal through March 31st I think. You need to get the $30 blackberry data plan along with your normal plan to cover your data (internet, streaming stuff and browser) and a text plan if you want to text. ANd extra for navigator if you want that but BBmaps(GPS supported) is free as is google maps(does not support GPS yet on Storm). All that will cost $$$.
If you get one now I would suggest loading the latest OS Leak, currently 4.7.0.103 (not supported by anyone except for other individuals on here will try to help you along the way if you are lucky) but you are expected to read lots of threads and posts and figure stuff out by readingand not posting the same questions that 1000 other people have already asked.
With that version ( .013, not supported by RIM, blackberry or verizon) things seem to be running. There are still a few glitches but it is better than the .75 official release.
It is easy to start using the Storm and have your Love for it turn into aggrivation with it all the time still having fun.
But if your phone or email is not working and you need it to then you can find yourself wondering how to live without it.
So...that is my input.
Would I do it again? Yes it was fun but there has been lots of hairpulling moments.
But I do like the Storm. I just wish that Verizon and RIM could have released a better OS by now. Having had the phone 3 months and not being able to use the video camera was a killer. That seems to work fine on the .103 OS leak.
I think my son's LG Dare is faster but less functional, and will be less apps once the Storm Apps start coming out soon. But he has not had to deal with updates and things not working.
Some people including him can not stand keying on the Storm since you have to push it.02-13-09 11:53 AMLike 0 - Want a cool touchscreen phone?
Want BlackBerry's push email?
Want Verizon's network?
Only one choice.
Of course, I'm biased as I received a perfectly functional Storm in terms of hardware and even software (still on .75, I allow for plenty of free memory which helps with stability)02-13-09 11:58 AMLike 0 - i think your patience level should decide.
if you're expecting this thing to work flawlessly out of the box, i'd wait. RIM is making great strides as seen in several beta OSes, but there is still a decent amount of work to be done.
on the other hand, ive had mine since 3 days after release, and ive loved it since. im also more patient than most (i think)02-13-09 11:59 AMLike 0 - Well, I went into the VZW store fully intending to get a Curve, having read so much negative press about the Storm
But I decided to look at the Storm just for grins...my old eyes loved the screen, and I was digging the "click screen"....much better than the iPhones I'd played with.
After having used the phone for a month, I'm perfectly satisfied...still using the .75 OS. Yes, I would lie the phone to be a vit faster, but it's not debilitating in its sluggishness. I'd happily try a leaked OS, but really haven't had the time....or felt the necessity to bother.
Of course, YMMV!
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com02-13-09 12:31 PMLike 0 - Go t o the store and try it... Or buy it. If you don't like it return it. At the same time if can wait there will be better bbs in the future
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com02-13-09 03:05 PMLike 0 - Get it. It took me a month to jump on the bandwagon, but I sure am glad I did! I was considering the iPhone as well, and I am sure I made the right choice. If you feel comfortable, upgrade to .99. It makes a huge difference!
Basically, I absolutely LOVE my Storm. DO IT!02-13-09 05:16 PMLike 0 - Well went a little earlier today to play with one in the store (about an hour). I really like it but I am surprised at the lack of knowledge the salesmen have. Just by reading this forum for one day I was telling him things it did that he had no knowledge. Anyway after trying a few things with I like it. I did have ALOT of trouble typing as my finger always seemed to hit the letter next to the one I wanted, but I guess this will take practice.
So I am going to sleep on it tonight and maybe go back and play again tomorrow, of course only for research. (Well thats what I'll tell the wife). Heck there is nothing wrong with buying myself a Valentines day gift.
Thanks for all the responses.02-13-09 05:58 PMLike 0 - Got my Storm on Monday and so far so good, no where near as many problems or issues that I've read about but mine was built in late January, so maybe they are getting better in listening to their customers

02-13-09 06:14 PMLike 0 - I say "why not?" This is a fantastic phone that has a few OS issues that will probably be gone very soon. Don't bother waiting a month or two. Get it and start getting used to it. I have not had any of the hardware issues others have had, nor has any of my friends. I little bit of light shines thru the edge of the screen....so what? I love this phone.....go get one!02-13-09 06:48 PMLike 0
