How does one have both a Today Area in the home screen along with ability to choose the app icons displayed in the rows below?

In either the Custom template (Today Area option) or the Zen template (no Today Area option), I can't find how to integrate the two.

Any directions are highly appreciated.

For custom themes you need to go to the properties for your Zen Icons and check the box that says "Use Device Application Order" for all of your icons.
