So according to this, Google is releasing a modified Android OS that runs on QNX, exclusive for BlackBerry devices. Only time can prove these bloggers wrong/right.

That's my stance also, time will tell. Just wanted to throw it in the forum.

In sure the cb hive will flame the post and talk about the oha and this and that. But there are also some pretty smart people on here that could explain that post/possibility.

Interesting, but highly unlikely. I'm just going to file this under "bull$h!t until officially announced" and continue waiting.

FYI: The file is getting quite large and the stench is becoming unbearable...

I read that thread. It would be a huge task to replace a Linux kernel with a microkernel, for example, Linux kernel has system level camera drivers that when mucked with as when done with kernel devs in XDA result in image artifacts. Even if it was technically capable I fail to see the reason to devote so much dev hours. Most android exploits don't involve the kernel at all.

Drivers are a non issue here. Remember BlackBerry wrote all drivers powering your BlackBerry phones, with NDAs and everything. And BlackBerry wrote them, not vendors. I repeat that, because lots of exploits rely on kernel drivers provided by vendors.

Why would they bother? The majority of their former customers run iOS or Android devices in BYOD environments. They obviously don't care about the extra security that a QNX based BBOS would have provided to them. And for the handful of customers that do care, tough luck on them. If I were Chen I would just run vanilla Android with some light BB skinning and call it a day. This nonsense of swapping in QNX is just that, nonsense. Reminds of the instagram coming to BB10 thread where this whole forum got trolled badly. Ugh.

    Smells like bull.

That Oslo (Android silver Passport) runthrough managed to get the Android kernel version on screen for a moment:

    3.4.0-grsec-(some_build_id)

Much less fanciful than parroting the word "microkernel" like some sort of defective.

It's interesting for sure. As much as it needs to be taken with a grain of salt, it WOULD make sense. The only thing BlackBerry really has going for them is their reputation for security which is still the best in the business. Taking a chance to throw their name on a device with a different core than their own, is very risky. It would be very stupid to gamble with their reputation just to compete within the consumer market.

How sweet would it be if the partnership with Google will go that deep that BlackBerry will be at the core of it with QNX? Who knows? Only time will tell... it seems plausible to me though.

I think this is actually possible. However, that is only if you believe that Google and BlackBerry are working closely to make Android secure. I could see this working as a part of the Android for Work campaign. If Google makes BlackBerry the face of this campaign, not only would BlackBerry be able to keep their standing as a cyber security company, but would also be able to reach the segment of the market that didn't care in the first place and were going to choose Android either way.

My main problem with replacing a kernel is the bugs that may appear. QNX has never been tried with Android, and porting all system calls may provide some unexpected bugs. If any of such bugs would crash the phone or even brick it (highly unlikely, but still, it would prove a marketing nightmare for BB.

Well, not entirely untested. It has been dealing with the BB10 Android runtime.
