    Its HD calling feature.

Wideband audio, also known as HD voice, refers to high definition voice quality for telephony audio compared to standard digital telephony "toll quality". It extends the frequency range of audio signals transmitted over telephone lines, resulting in higher quality speech. The range of the human voice extends from 80 Hz to 14 kHz but traditional, voiceband or narrowband telephone calls limit audio frequencies to the range of 300 Hz to 3.4 kHz. Wideband audio relaxes the bandwidth limitation and transmits in the audio frequency range of 50 Hz to 7 kHz or higher.

There is not setting on device. This is Cellular service provider service with 3G and LTE..

I can say like 3G to 4G with reference to data , this is next generation voice transmission technology.

    Check with your Service provider.

I just moved to a 3g plan. Prior to which I was on a 2g mobile data plan.

This ikon may be appearing due to the 3g service and may not be available to a 2g data subscriber.

Both people have to be on the same network provider to get HD calls. Stupid rule, I know.

Not true, I've made international calls to foreign networks and still got it, as well as other networks locally.

    That's not true at all.

I always get HD calling no matter who I call..it doesn't depend on other people's providers..as long you tou have that feature with your carrier your good

To clear this up: Both carriers need to support HD voice calls plus both persons need at least an active 3g connection. If one side's carrier doesn't support HD calls, no side will benefit from this feature.
I wondered the same because I heard our two largest carriers introduced HD voice calls with their LTE plans, yet my carrier still refuses to introduce it.

    Double-typed and posted with a BlackBerry Q10.

Why is it, that when I am calling from my Z30 (Vodafone UK) to my Q5 (Three UK), that I don't get the HD calling, but when I call my mother who is on Vodafone using Nokia Lumia, I get HD calls?

My Three UK sim card as well as my Vodafone UK sim card is always more than 3G (currently H+ as I'm testing it), but no HD calls.

Edit: maybe Three UK doesn't support HD calls. Haven't asked them yet! Now I'm starting to wonder which network providers support HD calls in the UK. Anyone know?

    Even it is device specific.
Some network providers enable HD calling only on few BSC's .if noth the users are on network which has HD voice enabled and if the device supports, it will work..
If short its like cellular video calling...
