We have a Q5 purchased directly through Blackberry and currently use Telus ( BC,Canada) as our provider. With this phone we have a bare bones text/minutes only pkg.
There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off data and have it connect solely through wifi. Even at home it does not default to wifi reliably. Turned on data last night, received messages and watched the data usage jump. A phone call to telus confirmed that the Q5 does not allow wifi only and a data plan must be used. Is this correct or just salesmanship? Thanks!

You should be able to turn off mobile data by navigating to Settings > Networks and Connectons > Mobile Network and then turn Data Services off. By turning this option off your phone will only connect to Wi-Fi networks.

I can confirm that this option is available on the BlackBerry Q5 (and should be available on all BlackBerry 10 devices).

That is ridiculous! Lack of information about BB10 is pandemic.

Q5 (or any other BB10 device) runs on WiFi just fine.

I used my Q5 for almost a year with data turned off. When I first got limited data I would turn on data only when I needed it.

I have Mobile Network in my pull down Quick Settings menu so it is easy to check the settings.

Both mine and my daughter 's Q5 is talk/ text only on Koodo which is the low cost arm of telus and runs on the same network. The data on both phones is always turned off. Wifi only.

Yes, you can use it without data. I'm currently running it on WiFi only.

Yes it can run without a data plan. I use wifi without issues and I don't have a data plan. I've experienced zero issues and owned the phone since last summer.

To turn off data: Touch network connections, Touch mobile network (it will show your providers name- Telus etc), Touch data services while roaming, Touch the required setting (prompt, on, off)- choose off. It is now set.

If you wish to turn off data completely- Touch the data services slider so that it changes from on to off.

How is the battery performance of the q5 with the data completely turned off in between charging cycles?

I can get way over a day, and into the second day, if I use it for calls only.

    Great device.

My Q5 is like this for 99% of everyday, means I can still recieve all my calls but every single message I send is free since I have wifi at work and home. education about BB10 is the best way.
