When the 10.2 or whatever update is released, will the newer shipments come with that version of OS out of the box? I remember how the Bold was originally released with 7.0 but after all the complaints regarding battery life and such, newer shipments came out with 7.1, although I'm not sure if this is the norm for BlackBerry.

Another issue I've always had with BlackBerry is how software updates have to be pushed by carriers. Unlocked phones don't have that feature. With my Symbian Nokias, updates were available regardless of what carrier you were using (even just on Wi-Fi without a SIM card installed). Same thing with IPhone.

    Hi and welcome to CrackBerry!
As the US carrier VZW still hasn't release a 10.1 OS, I am sure they won't be releasing mew shipments with any 10.2
I can only speak for my carrier, VZW but even when I got a replacement Bold 9930, for my one purchased on the first day, it did not come with the updated OS. Whenever I got a replacement, the first thing I did was wipe and install a new OS.

I believe it depends on the carrier but I don't see them releasing phones with 10.2 on them until it becomes official at their site (like VZW releases an official 10.2) and they have sold out of their stock og phones with older OSes on them.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I was hoping they would do that. My unlocked 9900 came with 7.1 out of the box. I bought it last year. And I know that the newer 9300 3G's were later released with OS 6 out of the box even though they were originally sold with OS 5.

The new OS10 phones automatically update their software to the latest offered by the carrier when you do the initial setup. I am not sure what the unbranded phones do, but probably use the carrier ID of the SIM card for updates.

As for what the newer phones ship with, using the Playbook as an example, it shipped with the early OS until the later batches near the end of its run. This change of base OS on the PlayBook may have been more for blocking any possible rooting, as a newly purchased PlayBook would download the latest OS as part of the initial install, just like the OS10 phones. The rooters were able to bypass this initial download, so BlackBerry had to ensure later PlayBooks had the later OS loaded by the factory, which fixed the rooting.

I have an unlocked 9900 with a 7.1.0.523. Whenever I click the Check Software Updates, it says Your Blackberry Is to Date. Whereas with my previous Nokias, they were able to update Over the Air regardless of SIM card installed (even without SIM). Same with iPhone.

You may be confusing unlocked with unbranded. On the older phones like the 9900 the branding was permanent, identified by the boot screen, and this branding is what was used to identify the software to load to the phone.

With the new OS10 phones, the branding is associated with the SIM, so you will get the software approved for the SIM brand. You do not even need to have it unlocked. For example, the American users could put in a Canadian SIM into their locked phone and get the latest Canadian updates, which tend to happen quicker the US carriers.

All BB10 devices prompt for an OTA software update during their initial setup, so once 10.2 Os officially released by the carriers any devices bought will essentially come preloaded with it, or at least that's how it will seem to the end user.

Thanks robsteve! My 9900 is both unbranded and unlocked (open-line as they call it here). I was using a 9780 before this, also unbranded. So, OS 10 will be like iPhone and the older Nokias? In that updates will be via region, not necessarily by carrier?

No legacy device ever shipped with the latest OS, so don't expect BB10 devices to. That's asking a lot of BlackBerry. They're not Apple.

Likely not but the phone would automatically try to update to the latest update upon set up

The device in the box could have been made months ago or even over a year ago so it will have the old OS.

To answer your question yes. When the firmware gets released most new shipment should have it installed. The A10 is getting shipped with 10.2 and Z10 are started being shipped with 10.1 and Q10 already come with 10.1.

You're answering a question by saying "should". That's pure speculation.

My Verizon Q10 either came with 10.1 or updated to 10.1 upon activation. I bought it a month ago.

You can check it from the box. I think it does state the OS version

My guess is Yes. And I base that on the fact that my Verizon Q10 came with 10.1.0.xxxx

My VZW Q10 came with 10.1 right out of the box. Really hoping that VZ pushes out 10.2 and any future updates without too many delays.

Hahaha. I mean do I get a legitimate safe option to update it to the latest OS version whenever I want?

That's a good question. I would think it would be dependent on whatever the carrier the unit was first locked to
