With AT&T sometimes if you go to a Corporate shop, they will give an early upgrade free. Try it, you know what they say, "If you don't ask, you don't get..."

If you're the primary account holder, you can often get an upgrade a year early as navi just said. Sometimes they like to be jerks and only hand out a partial discount, though.

I haven't used an upgrade for a phone since 2008. Full price because I feel in the long run you end up spending more for the phone.
