Edited with a more precise diagram:
    -----------------------------------------------
Using a little Pythagorean Theorem, I came up with the attached diagram. I am considering going from a Torch 9810 to a Q10, hence the example.

    Rough dimensions:
    9810 - 1.88" x 2.5" (3.2" diagnal) = 4.69 sq in
    9900 - 2.24" x 1.68" (2.8" diagnal) = 3.76 sq in
    Q10 - 2.19" x 2.19" (3.1" diagnal) = 4.80 sq in

If my math is right, the Q10's screen width is just a hair narrower than the 9900, but is 0.5" taller...basically real estate from the row of buttons. Coming from the 9810, I'd gain about 0.3" width, and lose 0.3" in height. However, my screen real estate would actualy increase by a tad. Not bad

    Thanks a lot.
That's a very nicely put post for all Q10 enthusiasts.

I guess the next version of Q10 would have a screen similar/bigger than Torch 9810.
    That would be simply amazing.

Great post ... that explains why the media reported a 30% increase but my cup is only half full. If BB would have added .16 of an inch in width and height the Q would have been no wider than the the majority of touch phones today and still shorter than the Z. The screen would have been 5.52 square inches. a 47% improvement over the 9900. Yes I like the Q... and wish that I didn't buy the 9900 just before they announced BB10.

With bb10 not needing specs thrown at it just to perform well and the q10 being less suited to the games that might in time demand more horsepower, I wonder if they might go into a 2 year update cycle with their main qwerty device, so this year we get the q10 and then next year instead of a q11, we instead get a slider with the q10 remaining on sale alongside it with the q11 showing up the following year or so.

You might want to contact a Product Engineer from Blackberry as to why they designed the Q the way they did. Because anything else is pure conjecture.

Not really, if you add to the width and height to the screen you will get a bigger screen . There may be reasons why the screen is the size they have chosen but that doesn't change my wish to have a slightly larger Q10.

It not conjecture it is just an personal opinion.

Not to mention the amount of pixels totally blows the 9810 out of the water. The 9810 has 307200 pixels and the Q10 518400 so your screen real estate is actually almost doubled. To me this is very important when looking at detailed documents.

shouldnt the Q10 screen be a little wider since the phone itself is a little wider than the 9900? I thought the idea was to keep AT LEAST the same width screen as the 9900, only it would be longer?

I find it a bit disappointing that the Q10 screen would be any bit less wide than the 9900

I suspect that this is a software issue dealing with swipes or something like that that they have to come in from the edge. Regardless, your point is well taken the usable width should have been no less than the 9900.

Great look at the dimensions, thanks. I was hoping it would be just a tad taller to give it some decent video landscape viewing, but will gives it a look in any case.

Apps... With the current screens devs only have to worry about the height of there app. You make to 2 screen size that don't correspond in any way then you cause more work. And the last thing Blackberry needs is to make things harder for devs.

Man, looking at that makes me wish they went a little taller and matched the Torches height. At 2.5"x2.2" they could've added an extra row of icons and less scrolling.

Doesn't work. The screen ratio was set to 1:1 by RIM, so screen height and width needs to match.
Same with the comment about better landscape use. That won't be possible since the screen is 1:1 - both dimensions are equal, so you simply don't have a landscape mode.

Looks bigger than that on videos-2.8 to 3.1. main thing is BB seem to have made better use of the space. Materials and build quality are much better as is camera set up. 2100 mAh battery is a winner as is the 64GB micro SD in addition to the 16GB on board storage. Can't wait to get my hands on a Q10-9800 still going strong in Seidio case.

I think the picture would be much clearer if in the screen diagram you posted all the screen started off from the same bottom left hand point. Since they are not sharing any point and are over lapping each other it makes it harder to visualize.

hopefully I was able to describe what I was trying to say in a made sense.

Now how about another with ENLARGED pixels to 1:1? That would really highlight the increased real estate ......

Thanks for the suggestion. I replaced my hand drawn diagram with a more precise diagram, and have included the two Torches and also the Z10 for reference.

For anyone who's interested I was wondering how this compared to the original iPhone which for half a decade was considered the perfect size.

    iPhone with 3.5" screen - 5.98" sqin. - 2.21x2.71 (2:3 screen ratio)

The iPhone (prior to the 5) is only 24.5% bigger than the Q10. Not bad considering the Q has a full keyboard attached to it.

The width is the important number because it is easier to scroll down than go from side to side as you expand the text. In that regard then the BB9900 is probably equal to or better than the iPhone on the internet . The iPhone 4S screen is 3.0177inches by 2.0315 inches so the 9900 / Q10 have wider screens. Perhaps the longer screen benefits some Apps and viewing videos in landscape. The Q10 should have aimed to have a 3.5 inch diagonal just to meet the "benchmark". Maybe BB wants room to grow with the next premium model. Anyway, all this to say that I think the 9900 is OK on the internet and so will the Q10.

Remember that BB10 is gesture based so the bezel will have to take up some space as well.
