I confess I know very little about what HDR does, but was impressed with some of its achievements last year with a friend using the setting on his S3 while we were in Florida.

So I thought I would start putting it through its paces a bit, and see what it's best for, helps to know when trying to get a good picture eh.

So here is my first pictures with HDR on and Off. Same focal point, a few seconds apart.

Will try some others when the right ideas crop up. Any recommendations of a good HDR pic environment welcomed.

Thanks for the examples. Doing a garden tour today and anxious to try HDR. Should be a fun outing at the very least.

Look forward to seeing some examples if you get a chance to do HDR and non.

This is High Dynamic Range, otherwise known as Wide Dynamic Range on other devices.

HDR - notice the balance between high light and low light.

Gotcha thanks for that. Been playing with the camera all afternoon, out in the sun with the dogs and have to say that the quality is really something. Compared to its predecessors.

Been out having a little experiment of my own, and am torn with the results.

Sometimes I like the non HDR for the dark areas, and other times I like the way it brings the other colours out.

Guess when in doubt, take one of each haha.
Quality wise, I love them all

You don't even have to take two separate pictures. In the camera settings there is an option to save the original (non-HDR) photo while in HDR mode.

One quick observation I thought I would mention...

When using the camera in HDR+ standard mode, and also HDR on its own, be careful when taking the pic, and pause for a second when you snap it.
Im guessing because of the way it works is the cause of the problem. But if you snap and are in any way moving, the pic will be blurred. Where as standard will do pretty well.

Yes because essentially it is taking 2-3 pictures and stitching the middle colors together..

HDR works by actually taking 3 pictures, one with the exposure right on, one with the exposure opened a lil, and another with the exposure closed down a little and then combines it all together to give you the best picture possible, which is why the movement in the picture.

Thanks for that. Was pretty much my understanding of it. Just wanted to make others aware of the slight pause needed when taking pics using it. Especially if its a one off shot. Dont try using it for motion shots haha.

Good general description, but there is a lot more going on the balance the picture out. I've noticed that HDR on my Q takes pretty nice pictures outdoors in good lighting, but colours and balance are way off in other lighting conditions. I'll do some comparison pics this weekend with a Q10 and an i5 to show what I mean.

Still, I am really glad that BB10 has an HDR option, now they just have to balance it. I use HDR for basically every pic on my iphone, unless it's an action shot. Usually produces amazing results.
