I remember a while ago, when I wanted to use a Sprint 9930 on verizon, the verizon store told me that it's not possible to use the sprint blackberry on their network...is the Q different?

From what I have heard in the past, both Verizon and Sprint will not activate phones that were not purchased from them.

Sprint and Verizon use cdma for their network. Att and T-Mobile use gsm. It's a hardware problem, not just a software problem.

It all comes down to the CDMA/GSM issue: your best bet is going to be to either get a Verizon phone outright or to see if you can swap yours for someone who might be trying to change contracts the other way.

Last I heard Verizon won't activate a phone on their network that is not sold by Verizon or Verizon authorized dealers. No need to get into the technical CDMA/GSM incompatibility issue.

They activated my eBay-purchased Z10 with no problem a month or so ago
I even told them I bought it from eBay and there was no issue.

You can us a Verizon blackberry on a GSM carrier but you can't use a GSM blackberry on a CDMA carrier. Most CDMA blackberries come or came with a GSM chip for world use but not vise versa.
The issue is the available hardware. But you can't activate a sprint blackberry on a Verizon account but the other way around is less impossible.
