Yeah, battery life is a definite factor for me. I don't wanna have to keep charging the device 3 and 4 times a day like I do now with my Android slider. Fortunately, I didn't have to do that with my Torch 9800, where I'd get a day and a half of juice with moderate usage and still have about 40% left. I'm hoping for the same for this one.

    Hi,

I've kind of conceded the battery life -versus- performance, screen size, etc. battle in my head.. While I hope to heck I can get at least a solid respectable day (recognizing that everyone version of 'a day' will vary) out of one full charge up cycle, I'm willing to cede some battery life so long as I get incrementally better performance and screen size..

Yes, the 9700 easily lasted 2 days, even 3 at a push.

I still think that amount of an increase over the l-series is unlikely, but it would be an interesting factor if the n-series was to come out with both a smaller screen and say a battery in the 2000-2100mah range as that should result in a battery life that would be very welcome for those that needed more of a work horse.

A related question. On my 9900 I use the setting to control 2g, 2g and 3g, and 3g only a lot.

    Do we know:
-how power-hungry is 4g likely to be over the earlier generations
-whether the new phones will still work on 2nd generation GSM technology, and have an option to select 2G on them (if this proves to be a requirement for decent battery life)?

    Thanks guys

It will depend on the carrier, due to the way they expand their network, some will not want people using 2g-only, but realistically if you are somewhere with reasonable networks then the main way to save your battery life would be to switch off 4g rather than needing to drop all the way down to 3g since this device does have a bigger battery than a 9900 after all.

    Hi

Its a tough call really as my instincts say to get the physical keyboard but I really haven't seen the BB10 UI experience on the N Series.

Have to wait and see before making a decisions although got plenty of time until June when I can upgrade.

I bet that RIM still doesn't get it and I'll be stuck using my 9700 (with a cracked camera glass) for the next few years, or eventually I'll just give up on BlackBerry all together. Maybe I should just see if there are some new 9700 still available and stock up. I only check crackberry ever now and again, instead of a few times each day, because RIM is simply out to lunch. They never even got the task sync correctly on the Mac, and I even wrote to both of the CEO directly.

I don't get it honestly. If Samsung can make a 3100mah battery thin enough for my GN2, why can't RIM follow suite? If what I am reading is correct that qnx gives you more performance for less power consumption, a battery sized around 2700-3000mah would give users days on moderate use. I'm talking 2.5 days.

Consider the dimension of the phones you are talking about, it is a lot tougher to fit in a 3100mah battery in a much smaller device without making it too thick for most people.

Realistically, you would expect them to be aiming at 1 day of heavy to very heavy use from this device when it comes out.

Yeah, its not just about thinness. The Note IIs battery is really really big, it has a lot of space to spread out in. Battery capacity relates more to overall volume than to depth. Now, I dare say that we'll be able to get an aftermarket battery of huge proportions (say 3000mAh) but it will add significant bulk. A fair trade off for some people, but you can't take a modern device to market being thicker than the previous generation. People think that thin is better, somehow.

I imagine that the X10 will get better battery life than the Z10, because of its smaller screen and generally being more efficient (less time faffing with the on screen keyboard), but I can't imagine it'll be a huge enough difference for it to be a dealbreaker. But I have faith that the BB10s will have impressive battery life. RIM have always been good at it, and they've had a lot of time to make optimisations.

When I look at pictures of the back cover of the X10 , I am thinking that the cover is shaped to hold a larger battery than the current BB9900. say 1800 ? ( pure conjecture ).

That device had such wicked battery life, didn't it?

That might be a tall order though ... 9700 also had no touch screen, a single core processor, 3G (vs. LTE), a 480 x 360 screen and no GPU if I remember right. Plus a huge battery relative to its small size!

Most of them were really good. The only one I had trouble with was the 9900. Torch was 'ok', but not amazing. The 9700, 8900 and 9000 all got good battery life for me. Ditto for the 8310

Given that they managed to fit in an 1800mah battery into the z10, that battery cover might indicate they have managed to squash in a larger battery than that.

Maybe I'm still stuck in the past with my 8830. I got ridiculous life out of that, I mean 40-44hrs. I don't mind having a thick device, all this go thin mess is not for man hands. All in all I still have good faith in RIM. Besides the battery life complaint I'm coming back again for the keyboard alone. Typing while not looking at the screen is something I miss during those pop up meetings at work lol. "Quan are you getting these new changes in procedure?" SURE I AM!! Texting my behind off under the table.

The BlackBerry J-M1 battery is the standard battery that ships in the new BlackBerry Bold 9930/9900 and Torch 9850/9860. It's a super slim battery, allowing the new Bold to acheive the status of thinnest BlackBerry to date. That thinness comes with a cost though. Compared to the 1500mAH battery in the previous generation BlackBerry Bold 9780/9700, this battery clocks in at 1230mAH, which immediately means that all things being equal, you have 18% less power to work with. "

Hopefully the RIM knows that X1 owners are not so concerned with thinness /weight of the device but rather whether they can go all day on a charge. The 9900 did not have to be so thin at the expense of function. Supposedly BB10 is more efficient than BB7 so perhaps a 1800amh battery will be enough. We note that the Z10 battery is as thin but longer than the 9900 battery. We look forward to a thicker battery on the X10.

I agree, I don't mind having a thicker, more substantial device, so long as I know the battery it sports is on par and offers AT LEAST an all day charge, with moderate use.

Yeah - that was my gripe. I kept a battery too, but then had to deal with the long bootup time. Hopefully both the bootup time and the battery life are better than the 9900.
