I'll open my phone up to check something and a I see this stupid ad on the bottom part of the screen. I shouldn't be getting ads on the phone itself! And no I don't have any apps open

Some app that you downloaded and installed has this embedded in it.

list the recent apps you've installed and google those names + ads . Some apps have taken on ad-delivery systems that use homescreens or lockcreens. ES File Explorer was an example. The free version hooked you into okaying ads that ended up on your lockscreen. They got rid of it after lots and lots of complaints.

Again, it is typically because of a free app such as a launcher, a weather app, etc. Review your recently installed apps and remove them one at a time until the ads go away.

This is might be a stupid thought, but is it possible that it's recognizing the device as a non-BlackBerry one and hence showing ads after the "trial" expired?

What "trial". If you're referring to the Hub, I would think not. Besides, AFAIK, Hub ads appear in the Hub itself for those who did not purchase the subscription on non-blackberry phones.

You can download the BlackBerry Launcher on non-BlackBerry devices I believe.
