I have not used the unlock code because I am an AT&T customer. But from all I have read, using an unlock code so you can use a sim from another carrier has no effect on the phone malfunctioning.

I wouldn't sweat over it considering how much is saved when compared to buying new from a year and half ago.

Off topic, but as far as I know, there are no negative effects on the phone.
