Without having it eat up battery in the background? I used to think just "Xing" the app closed it but this is not the case. New to Android fyi.

Same as BB10, head into the application manager and force stop the application.

There's an application manager? Where? (I know, I should look before I ask. )

Pre-loaded apps can only be disabled you can't delete them

All I have been doing to close out an app is using the square button on the bottom right of screen then either using the "x" to close or doing clear all. Seems to work fine.

Hit the square button at the bottom of your screen. That will take you to the BB10-like multitasking screen. Hit the little x to close an app

If you need to force stop an application, go to Settings>Apps>[App you want to force stop]>Force Stop.

I knew about this but wasn't sure if it closed it completely. Didn't know about force close through the Settings though!

    Thanks guys.

Check your device usage by app. You might not have to completely close everything.
