Many threads on this, the little bars on the signal strength meter in notifications are not comparable to other phones, including other BB's.
A number of people on here have done side by side tests with other devices, using actual db numbers and found the Priv comparable and in some cases better.

Two places where I work a lot give me zero bars, yet I have no trouble making and receiving clear phone calls - or - downloading web pages.
To talk and surf at the same time, I need 2 bars or better.
I like to think the Priv 'bars' are highly accurate, while most phones have them set to read high, giving you a good feeling, even if calls start to drop at 2 bars.
One known issue is that the Priv tries to hang on to LTE until the bitter end, resulting in dropped calls, but only if you are in an area with spotty LTE. Depending on your OS and carrier, you may be able to disable LTE, if you are actually dropping calls. Other wise ignore the bars.

The meter/icon does not seem very accurate. Or rather mine always seems low.
