This should be a major determining factor for those concerned about ongoing support:

"While BlackBerry will work with its go-to-market partners on approval and delivery of hotfixes, BlackBerry has the ability to directly patch all PRIV variants and will do so when necessary to protect users and enterprises."

Good to see this comment. Hopefully they commit to Marshmallow in the same fashion. No reason why unlocked Priv can't get it ASAP

He is saying "they have the facility to do so" - yes like all OEMs

The important bit is "approvals" - I am guessing unlocked get patches done quickly and Carriers... that might be a bit trickier.

The timescale to beat is every four weeks - which is what nexus devices are now on.

    Notice the wording here:

BlackBerry will release these monthly updates to users that have purchased PRIV through shopblackberry.com and to PRIV resellers (carriers and other authorized dealers) that have agreed to participate in our regular monthly update program and facilitate rapid approval of our monthly updates for over-the-air (OTA) to subscribers.
They have deliberately worded that to make it appear that everyone will get it the updates but it can equally mean "those who have agreed to do so".

Someone ask him to clarify which he means and see if you get a response.

Fair enough, but on the hot fix critical issues, you ended the quote before it should have been finished, as he says that they will bypass waiting on carrier agreement and get the patch direct to all Privs. This works for me.

Louks: It cannot be unlocked. As John Chen has said several times, we would not bring Android to a BlackBerry device unless we could do it securely. With Priv by BlackBerry, our goal is to ensure that users are safe and secured knowing that the phone cannot be tampered with.

Louks: Launching with Android Lollipop was the most expedited way to get Priv to market. We will be supporting software upgrades for Android M in coming months as Priv rolls out. And we've committed to speedy updates for security improvements.

Plenty of reasons. Because it takes a long time to validate security and integrate features.

I don't see anything cryptic in what was said. Seems pretty clear to me. Buy it from BB direct, get your monthly updates. Buy it from your carrier, and like all phones bought through carriers, you are subject to their update schedule. Some "may" work with BB for the monthly schedule but don't hold your breath.
