Going from the passport to the priv while riding has been fantastic. Here is why:

Google Maps: I had Google maps on my passport but for whatever reason it kept getting slower and slower. Once navigation started it was fine but if I needed to make a change that was a long process.

Calls: I hated getting calls while riding. On the passport it would take the whole screen. Then when I didn't pick up I have a full screen message saying I missed a call. This is throughly annoying when it's cold as my winter gloves aren't touchscreen compatible.

The Priv on the other hand has a much better method. Incoming calls are on a little tab at the top. Missed calls are in the same spot. So no matter what my navigation screen is always visible which is especially useful when headed to new locations in DC.

Power: I have had a lot of issues charging the passport. My straight through USB to battery terminal charger will only charge the passport at 0.5a which results in me losing battery while riding. I also constantly get error messages regarding this. This doesn't happen on the Priv at all. Even the other 2 chargers I had replaced thinking they were faulty work fine.

Overall the Priv is so much better for use on the bike. It's better in every way save for 1. Due to the buttons on the side the grip on the phone isn't centralized. I haven't had any stability issues yet but I keep feeling that one day it might fall off if I ride too aggressively. Something I never feared with the passport.

Just thought I'd add my thoughts.

Using hands-free kit? Or the OP is a stuntman.

It won't be - loads of people do this, the OP is using it for Nav, with headphones or helmet speakers (normally headphones because you need to wear ear plugs regardless really or you go deaf).

I k.ow how frustrating it is using Nav on sound alone (with a phone in your pocket / bag)

Often get a tank bag with a clear slot on the top so you can see the screen

    <sigh>

He clearly uses the phone in a mount for the maps and navigation just as millions of car drivers do... And is annoyed that when he gets a call, BB10 blots out his view of the map, Androids' notification system is different and doesn't require him to stab at the screen in gloves to restore the map.

    He's a biker, not a moron.

I have heard of politicians who want to make in car GPS illegal because they fear distracted driving. Stick a pair of sugar filled toddlers in the back seat and see how distracting that is. Ban children from cars

If you are in the Washington, DC, area keep an eye out for the motorcyclist using his smartphone while driving. Call the police and save an innocent motorist or pedestrian from senseless tragedy. I have seen such behaviour and the motorcyclist involved was a menace.

Make sure that you pull over into a safe place to make that call while you are driving your car

I use a Sena. You don't have to see the screen if you are simply listening to the turn by turn instructions. For those that don't ride, look up Sena. It will make sense lol

Why exactly are you on a bike if you are using your phone. Actually, why exactly do you care about gps when you are on a bike. I have 4 Harleys, a BMW and one Honda RR just for doing wheelies once in a while. One of my Harleys has 132,000 miles on it and I'd be damned if I ever saw the need to look at a gps, phone, anything but the road. Throw the damn thing in your bag before you get yourself killed.

To clear some things up. I don't "use" my phone while riding. I just use it for navigation. I never use audio as I prefer silence when I ride. Just ear plugs.

I have never been distracted by my phone. I'm too focused on getting out of the way of distracted drivers. Just a quick glance is enough for me to know where I'm going.

I work as an IT specialist for a large AV company. A lot of the time I'm going to various properties around DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Occasionally heading up to Pennsylvania.

Commuting to and from work I only need the traffic update.

I always ride on the assumption that everyone else on the road is out to kill me! LOL

It's probably saved my life a couple of times so far as a "distracted" car driver has done something stupid near me.

Let me guess. An Apple, a Google, and a BlackBerry while you peddle your Schwinn bicycle through the local park. You ride without using your hands preferring to steer with your feet when not peddling. Video or it never happened. ;-)#

I think he steers by moving his balls from one side of the bike to the next. The weight of them should be more than enough to change direction.
