Just because it's a $900 device doesn't change what you already know is the obvious answer. Low light sucks.

Not sure if the word sucks is totally accurate, but yes it definitely is not the best , one has to admit it has got slightly better with the updates. Guess my ultimate question was why is the wife's old Z30 able to get a few better shots and I have heard a few of you say the manual mode is a huge help. Guess I'm looking to how one use this mode correctly. : )

I have had what I consider good results with the Priv in low light. For example, I had it at a Thanksgiving gathering where there was low light in the room and others took photos with iphones and Samsungs but everyone wanted me to send them my Priv photos because their pictures came out so dark compared to mine. Someone posted a couple of the pictures on Facebook among our friends and my comment was "How do avoid being in the picture--have the best camera phone at the gathering. LOL." True story.
Make use of the tools that are available. You can adjust the exposure before taking your picture, though I usually do the majority of my adjustments after the picture. I also usually take pictures in HDR. Then open the tools and use the one that lightens the photo, and adjust the color and pop. Another very cool tool is, you can turn on the flashlight (torch) look for the lightbulb icon that is available next to the flash icon. Turn it on. You get a steady, bright light with the flashlight. You can take a picture using that instead of the flash. You have more control of the lighting using it. Then adjust the picture with the lightening tool after the picture is taken.
I have lightened some pictures taken after dusk of nature scenes with good results as well.

I don't know what our collection of photos in the huge thread contains as far as night or low light shots. You might peruse it and see some of the shots made in lesser conditions and ask if the photographers had any special tricks. I have a feeling that good ones might have just be lucky shots in the main but some shooters might have taken some control when taking the picture.

I start at the end and move backwards looking for night and low light shots since the camera app has changed considerably over the year.

You don't even have to use full manual mode.

Just swipe left and right to adjust the exposure. Tap on the focus area. And you should be able to get a good shot.

I've gotten some good shots at night time adjusting only the exposure.

Haven't done any low light lately, but last Dec(2015), well before the current crop of camera updates, my Priv consistently blew away my wifes iPhone 6 in low light.

These were taken on a very dark nite and I was quite pleased with the results. I just adjusted the exposure slider. Fast and easy since it was a cold and rainy evening.

I'm just shocked at the "NIGHT MODE" of the Priv doesn't match that of the Passport.

Both using NIGHT MODE and full auto settings.

I think the PRIV photo would have look so much better if you ask it to focus on the rock. Just tap on the screen for the object u want to see.
The slider for + or - exposure is another feature I use often for night and indoor concert photos

What Priv seems to have trouble with is high contrast situations...such as in a dark room or at night, with something bright in the distance, or a bright window, etc. All the 'bright' objects get super washed out, or the dark ones disappear. But to be honest my Q10, Classic, and Passport all did the same thing. I was taking a video of a parade at night once, watching other people's phones as well...on their screens I could make out every detail, on mine all the bright objects were either washed out, or it was too dark to see anything at all...people must have been wondering why I even bothered. So I think it's really a BlackBerry camera software/rendering issue, not so much the OS or even the camera sensor.

Good point. Sometimes I do wish a night or low light shot would have come out better but I also don't take a lot of time to set them up. Rarely even set the phone or even a camera down on a stable surface, just hand steadied. If it comes out good. If not - well, the moment is also important.

I can relate to that good point. I was a victim of that a couple of years ago. My wife and I went to Washington DC for the Fourth of July celebration and I spent so much time trying to take pictures and videos that I mostly missed out on the whole experience. As much as I like to document things, the older I get, the more I realize that we need to take the time to actually experience real life events.
