At first, with my Z30, I was matching my older digital camera 4x3. But started to like the 16:9 size which also fills my TV better. Then the new digital camera has 16:9 so I've setted on that. But some folks like the 4x3.

All 16:9 does is take the 4:3 and crop the bottom and and top more so you're getting "less" picture. You can see this for yourself.

Switch the camera back and forth between 4:3 and 16:9 while looking at the same "scene" and you will see that although 16:9 looks wider, you do not get more field of view horizontally.

I use the 4:3 which matches the aspect
ratio of the sensor. In other words I get the maximum amount of pixels available. Then I can crop to whatever I want after the fact.

I usually use 16:9 ratio myself without any problems. Works beautifully.

I guess I need a 16:9 template that I can "slide" over 4:3 images to crop appropriately. Or similar for Portrait 3:4 to 9:16.

16:9 is indeed cropped from 4:3. the camera sensor is 4:3 in size, so this is the best setting to use for the highest quality.
however, if you are primarily viewing photos on your phone, the 16:9 resolution fills the screen when viewing photos in a gallery, so that may be of more value to you than having to zoom in on 4:3 photos to fill the screen.

Since 4:3 incorporates (kind of) a 16:9 image, is there a Windows program that can kind of superimpose a grid or 16:9 (or 9:16) rectangle over the 4:3 image and allow you to slide the rectangle around to achieve the appropriate cropping?

And I open with "kind of" because composing a 16:9 picture might be different then composing a 4:3 unless you have a really good eye and can imagine the cropped results while shooting.

edited to add: I found FastStone Image Viewer which has such a movable template. What's interesting is that it shows a bit different aspect or image but it might be because of how I shot the 4:3 and the "same" 16:9 pictures. As Wezard noted, this is NOT an Android app but a Desktop (Windows) program.

FastStone Image Viewer is great, much, much more than a viewer.
FastStone also has an image resizer that works great if you just want to resize a bunch at once.
    Both Free
They also have a Capture program that is great, not free but cheap.

Note: these are computer programs, not android apps, (yet anyway).

Shoot with your intended final ratio, imo. But 4x3 is a much better aspect ratio. It is a professional aspect ratio.

3x2 and 16x9 are consumer ratios.

I haven't checked lately, but are 16x9 frames getting more common these days? Just curious, because if anyone is printing photos, they'd have to crop a 16x9 to 4x3 for all the frames I can see from where I'm sitting (which would be a double-crop from 18MP down to around 10MP).

I like the idea of guide lines while shooting to let you know what 16:9 framing would look like.. this is common in cinema, as it is helpful to be able to see more than the intended frame size so you can tell when a boom mic is about to drop into frame, etc.

What? the sensor is native 4x3.

And 16x9 is unused outside of television production and internet video production. It's not used because people like 16x9 artistically, it's used because it's ubiquitous (and a compromise between 4x3 and 2.35:1

More importantly, 16x9 is not used for straight photography at all. Not unless you're a JPEG shooting consumer.

The sensor is native 4x3, yes. You can see this by choosing 4x3 vs 16x9 in the camera app.. 16x9 will be a narrower field of view. Most camera sensors are manufactured this way. Some sensors have started showing up on the market in 16x9 native over the past year or two, and you will likely find them in some of the 16MP cameras as of late, but this is not yet the norm.

Agreed, 16x9 is a weird aspect ratio, as it is what the ITU recommended for HDTV formats, but doesn't have much to do with photograph. It is more of a compromise between old-school 4:3 television formats and 2:35:1 or 1.85:1 film formats. It does however tend to coincide with what most people have for televisions and cellphone screens, so unfortunately, we're left with a bit of a conundrum as to what to provide -- lenses are circular, so can easily cover 4:3 frames, but 16:9 frames are increasingly what people are consindering to be "full screen".

Luckily Android tablets are moving away from 16x9, finally, and toward 4x3. So if tablets are a futuristic viewing format, then we're all set. The iPad hasn't changed, thankfuly.

16x9 computer screens are almost universally despised amongst those who remember 16x10.

But you're right: the democratization of photography and videography means that 16x9 might become more popular amongst the average consumer.

Instagram is surprisingly our savior in this situation, I hate to say it. And in a cool world we'd have 1x1 sensors; it would mean smaller optics, and no need to rotate the device. It's a great format when framing for a crop (well if you have the medium size and resolution, ie 6x6 medium format).
