Does installing a security app such as Norton or Avast effect how Ditek operates? Does it "cancel out" the security features pre-installed on the priv?

You mean DTEK? That doesn't actually do anything except tell you what permissions an app has already used.

Yes Dtek. Dumb spellchecker. I thought that was the case. I thought I read somewhere that Dtek scans your device, although I have never seen this occur. I thought it was because I have norton premium installed on phone.

They are as necessary as on any other modern Android device.

Sort of... but for properly secure BBM messaging you need BBM Protected.

Is it unnecessary because I own a priv, or because they are useless altogether

Well, I disagree that they are absolutely unnecessary.

Personally I do not run antivirus/security software, but there may be a case for them depending on how the device is used.

If they are unnecessary, why would they actually make the product in the first place. DTEK doesn't actually do anything but report what is being accessed by what. Android isn't a secure OS and worms and viruses can get in.

Unless you're opening your device and allowing apps from outside Google Play, they're unnecessary. Owning a Priv makes no difference.

Again, unless you're intentionally working to install malware it's highly unlikely you'll get infected by anything.

If they are unnecessary, why would they actually make the product in the first place. DTEK doesn't actually do anything but report what is being accessed by what. Android isn't a secure OS and worms and viruses can get in.
Because people ask for them. There's money to be made off people that demand a product whether they need it or not.

No, there's documented cases of infections.

Some are actively installing software from stores other than the Google Play store.

I haven't spent any time looking at specific cases, but fairly sure malware/viruses exist and are common enough on Android handsets.

Go ahead and install that stuff if you feel you need it. I don't install anything like that and I have nothing that ever needs to be scanned. The way I use my device literally requires no third party scanners whatsoever and I will never install one again after testing "Malwarebytes". Useless for me, again, because there's nothing malicious on my Priv, ever.

And they're doing so knowingly. Unlike some around here on BB10 who are using 1mobile and other non-Google Play stores despite warnings.

Right, and if they're going to take such risks, they are increasing their chances of picking up viruses and malware. In which case, an antivirus/security suite makes sense.

One time I read that antivirus are not necessary, However if you use an external memory or plug it into your laptop or exchange files with other phones, then it could be helpful. So I use an antivirus that does more. Like call block, app lock, find my phone, cleans my phone and more. It is also a one time fee and a well known antivirus for computers. This also minimizes, how many apps are running on my phone at the same time.

I think Android users that stick to Google Play, sticks to well known apps, keeps their apps and OS updated... especially the browser. And doesn't visit fringe web sites (porn, fee paid app sites, hack crack for apps) Likelihood of a virus is pretty small right now.
