Just wondering if it would be technically possible with the Priv to take full resolution 4896x3672 photos while filming in stead of 4896 x 2754 (16:9) snapshots? Are these snapshots of the same quality as if I made them while playing the video on my PC via VLC and then click shift + S (snapshot)? Might as well do that if the quality/outcome is exactly the same? Or is there or should there be a difference in quality?

not possible. not enough bandwidth to stream full-frame 4:3 at 30fps, but can do 16:9.
these snapshots will be higher quality than screenshots of a 1080p video (2 megapixel).. they should be around 13.5 megapixels.

    Thanks for the reply.
Just realized when I wrote this reply, that I wasn't clear in the openingspost. I did not mean to ask about shooting in full resolution @ 4896x3672 (4:3), but about the possibility to take full resolution photos while shooting in 1080p 30fps. I was only wondering about the technical possibility to be able to do that. Now screenshots are 4896 x 2754 (16:9) while one records in 1080p @30 fps.
I remember my Casio exilim P& S could take full rez photos (4:3) while recording in 1080p. Thanxs.

Maybe I'm still a bit confused by your question and terminology.
If you mean full-resolution 16:9 (4896x2754), then the answer is yes.
If you mean 1080p-resolution 4:3 or full-resolution 4:3, then the answer is no. The sensor operates in a cropped mode to meet bandwidth specs, so the ISP never sees more above/below the 16:9 crop (2754 height), so we can't save it as a photo since we don't have the pixels.
    Screenshots are not 4896 x 2754.. the priv's display is 2560x1440.

English is my third language, so guilty as charged.
Maybe some photos help to eliminate the confusion.

-When I shoot video in 1080p@30fps and look at the display of the Priv, there is an icon of a photo camera to take photos:
Camera: Snapshots while filming - full resolution?-2016-05-16_112132.jpg
At first I thought that when I tab on that icon that it merely takes a screenshot of the video, which fortunately isn't the case.

-If I tab on that photo camera icon to take photos and later check the details of these photos, it says:
Camera: Snapshots while filming - full resolution?-2016-05-16_112824.jpg
-What I meant to ask was: if I shoot video in 1080p@30fps and tab on that photo camera icon, would it then technically be possible to take 4896 x 3672 (17.98MP)(4:3) photos:
Camera: Snapshots while filming - full resolution?-2016-05-16_114151.jpg
in stead of the now 4896x2754 (13.48MP)(16:9) photos?

    ____
I wondered about this, because with some of my older Casio P&S (like the EX-S10; Casio EX-S10: World's slimmest 10MP compact: Digital Photography Review), I can shoot video in 848 x 480 (16:9) (UHQ Wide/HQ Wide, 30 fps) and can also take photos while filming. These photos are 3648 x 2736 (4:3) (10.1MP): the best and highest quality this cam can handle. Would be nice if the Priv could also take photos in the best and highest quality that it can handle (4896 x 3672 (17.98MP)(4:3)) while shooting a video @ 1080p or higher.

ok, that's what I thought you were asking about.. just got confused by screenshot terminology.

no, it is not possible.. the physical sony camera sensor in the Priv cannot operate higher than around 430 megapixels per second or so (rough estimate). In 1080p30 mode, the sensor is streaming around 405MP/sec, and at 4:3 full-frame, it would have to run at 540MP/sec, which is well beyond the capabilities of that sensor.

We probably COULD do it, but you'd have like a 600ms break in your video while the sensor is reconfigured to full-frame mode, which would not be good for video

On another lower-resolution device (or one with a sensor built and selected for this purpose) the bitrates could accommodate streaming full-frame, and then cropping only for the video recording, while still allowing for full-frame capture.

    Hope this helps explain.
