How do I backup my priv?
I don't want to use Google to backup .

I want to backup my contacts and other things in case I lost my phone.

All these apps I'm downloading keep telling me that my phone has to be "rooted"?

I have been using Gmail for my contacts, notes, calendar and email for years and always sync it to the Google servers.

Never had any issues and allows me to easily move between platforms and my contacts and calendar data is always synced.

I'm currently following the instructions here to try it out:

    http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-com...t-root-access/

    Or:

"Helium Premium ($4.99) works for both root and non-root users, and it lets you schedule backups to go to a cloud syncing and storage service, including Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box. There is a free version of Helium available, but it doesn't let you back up to a cloud service, which is really the piece you want if you're already making a copy of your SD card manually every now and again."

    - got quote from here (where there are more options):

It just backs itself up to Google Drive. No issues really.

Why would people who buy a device that boasts of security and privacy be willing to send their personal data to Google's insecure servers for hackers and advertisers to exploit?

The OP already said that they didn't want to use Google. Recommending Google is not helpful.

I am trying Helium, but I cannot get it to connect. I have the Windows app and the BlackBerry USB drivers installed on my PC, and I have USB debugging and PTP mode enabled on the Priv, yet it just sits there forever waiting to connect. Do I have to have the paid version of Helium to make the ADB connection over USB?
