When I open the BlackBerry Bridge Text Messages app, I get a spinning green circle which doesn't go away.

Apparently someone figured out if the Contact's phone number contains non-numeric characters, it causes the application to hang. It is actually a BlackBerry tweet which says that you can add letters to phone numbers. For example, "1-888-937-8538" can be stored as "1-888-west-jet".

Can someone verify that it is these non-numeric characters in the phone numbers that prevent the BlackBerry Bridge Text Messages app from starting?

I'll give this thread a little bump and see if anyone can answer that for you..

It's getting harder for us to answer these types of questions because we've all moved to BB10 which doesn't have that bridge functionality.

If BlackBerry is not going to fix this, is it possible to set up text messaging on the PlayBook (instead of using BlackBerry Bridge)?

That wouldn't be possible. Your playbook doesn't have a phone number.. unless it's a playbook 4G, but regardless they aren't releasing new playbook features anymore.

EDIT: you could sideload one of the free texting apps for android that sends and receives texts from a virtual phone number..
