Default Kobo eBook Reader App Fooked

It's a GREAT shame that Kobo (native ebook reader) cannot get their act together since the release of OS2. Kobo app worked quite well on OS2 Beta, but since the release of OS2, Kobo has been utter sh!t: every page turn = Javascript Alert dialog.

I've been emailing them every day since OS2 release and their latest solution is to switch off Playbook and reconnect to PC/Mac. This is supposed to allow RIM to push the new Kobo (v1.4.2.1) onto your Playbook. Well, it DOES NOT WORK. Nothing is updated. Nevermind that Kobo now needs to be pushed by RIM through Blackberry Desktop Software. Every other app is updated wirelessly via BB App World. 100% FAIL. Read your feedback!

Which is a shame, as the previous Kobo on OS2 Beta was just about perfect...

I had the same problem after the update to OS2 and after about a week, I got a small update and after that it showed the current version and worked right.

Just this week I did a factory restore (debrick method) to start fresh after some android issues - it's good now as well.

I'd say if your issue hasn't been resolved yet - you might think about a wipe.

    Default Works for me

Hi. Just today I connected to a wifi network and was notified about the available kobo update. The app works just fine for me post the update. So you might want to play around with your playbook a little more and see if you can get it to work

When the Kobo app started getting funky back in Nov/Dec, I decided to take the test and try the Android bar on OS2 beta and have since been using it instead of the native Kobo. Works just the same with a few newer benefits. You might want to sideload it and give it a try.

I've noticed weird behavior since the OS update. The page number footer appears in the middle of the page, or the text may be split into two columns. As a last resort, tried turning the PB 90 degrees to force landscape, then turned back to portrait (my favourite reading mode). Footer in the right place, and all is good. Until I open another book, then have to do it all over again. Kobo, we love you. Don't treat us like this. Just because you aren't owned by Indigo any more, I'm still paying good Canadian $ for your products, and I would appreciate a fix ASAP.

I now use ebook reader from the App store for $0.99. At least you can put your own books in, not like kobo. Yes I know you can sideload epubs in Kobo reader but its a pain.. Ebook reader is so much more usable and creator put out updates regularly.

This app hasnt been updated since November 2011?
Mine has no issues, and I get the feeling its a issue between your app and the playbook, which a wipe will be necessary by the sounds if a reboot hasnt solved it.

I agree its crap, especially compared to the Android edition. Kobo gets a middling score from me...customer service ain't great and the app is basic compared to Android version.

Is the sideloaded android version reliable?

Here's the solution provided by Kobo. Took several attempts before it was downloaded.
Kobo says the reason this is required is that the original OS2 install did not complete ok:

Thanks for your patience. Please try this:

Please power off the Playbook and then open the BB Desktop Software.
Connect the Playbook to the computer while it's off and do not turn it on.
You will see a red light on the Playbook.
On the BB Desktop app you will see a popup, ask them to press on Update, then on Install.
This will download the necessary updates to install the new version of Kobo app and BB OS 2.0

I got tired of the issues with Kobo since the OS 2.0 update and side loaded the Kindle app this weekend. It is annoying to have Kobo not be able to keep the correct page in memory I last read (at least it is in the correct chapter i guess) and to have to turn the orientation back and forth the get pages to display correctly. As soon as I finish my current book on the Kobo app I will be deleting it. The solution offered by Kobo to correct these issues is too much of a hassle plus I want the additional features the Kindle app offers like the built in dictionary.

I was hesitant to deal with side loading apps but I tried it this weekend and it was pretty easy. I am not the most tech savy person but I figured it out fairly quickly and now have nine new apps on my PlayBook to enjoy.

I have no problems with it on OS1 nor OS2, but after using the kobo app on my ipad, it shows the true potential of the app. We need the iOS Kobo version

I've had no issues with Kobo on my Playbook since last year, or following the OS2 update. I do wish Kobo would update the app to be at par with the Android/iOS versions.

heres what i dont get... i have been using Kobo since 1.0.8, through 2.0.0 Beta, and now into 2.0.0 Alpha. and ive yet to experience this, or any error??? not even once, let alone all the time. now this made me think originally its user error? after all, we are all using the exact same hardware, exact same software, its the same system... why should it work on one and not another, the only difference is the user. but then i got to thinking, i refuse to use android apps due to their memory sucking and overall poor quality so i dont have a single android app...

Is it possible android player is interfering with Kobo? isnt Android player Java Based so could be linked to the issues?

Just a thought, i dont have the technical knowledge to support this theory, its just a logical train of thought...

Likewise, I wrote to them asking when we will get reading life etc., the extra features would make it so much nicer, apart from that I have no issues whatsoever with Kobo.

I find it strange that some people experience these issues while others do not, as well. I am pretty sure I had not installed any Android apps when I began having the issues after OS2 was running. I actually had the issue with Kobo losing the place where I last read within the chapter prior to upgrading to OS2. The split page issue was post upgrade.

I still have issues with some free ebooks from them (especially ones from Smashwords in the Kobo store) being listed as "demos" on my PlayBook (yet working fine on my desktop or Droid X2).

I have the same problem. Strange, as I never had it under any of the 2.0 betas. Temporary solution for now is to start Kobo in landscape. Once your book opens up, then turn it to portrait.

I do too for what it's worth, haha never heard the word "fooked" either that said I peeped at the IOS version, and why can't the PlayBook have pulse and be socially active, I mean this is the default reader in the PB, RIM should be kicking arses

I think if you look, U-C what "fook" means!!!!

I don't know if it is true but yesterday someone posted that they purchased a book from kobo but that since the book was drm-free, the kobo app could not read it - they confirmed with kobo, supposedly. Now that is "fooked!"

Solution is easy. Delete the native Kobo app, which does not allow sideloading of your own books to the app.
Get the Android Kobo app and sideload it. It works flawlessly, and you can add your own books to it.
Sideloading is the savior of the PB, without question.

I agree with those on here as well with deleting the native Kobo app and sideloading the Android version. Did this when the Kobo app stopped working in November/December as well and haven't looked back. No real issues aside from the book I'm reading disappearing from the shelf on rare occasion (fixed by finnegaling with the website in My Library) and I rather enjoy the social updates they've done with rewards and connecting to Facebook.

Would be nice to see the native version grow closer to iOS and Android version rather than just lagging behind...
