- Are the headphones working anymore? If so, play some music with the headphones. Unplug them. Tweak the volume up, down. Pause and then try starting it up again. Darn, someone posted a similar problem yesterday and fixed it but I don't recall exactly what they did.
First try: First, press and hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds. Then leave it for 20-30 seconds and see if it restarts.
To REBOOT:
Press and HOLD all three keys for about 10 - 20 seconds: PowerOn, VolUp and VolDown. Start with the PowerButton. Keep holding past the 3-choice options screen. If you hear a shutter type sound, you've taken a Screen Shot and probably missed the PowerButton.bishbritt likes this.02-06-12 12:30 AMLike 1 - Superfly_FRRetired ModeratorI'll suggest you check the sound & notification settings in the parameters (upper right corner gear of the desktop) of the PB.
Set the volume & audio notifications levels here, disable audioboost and see if it gets better.02-06-12 03:43 AMLike 0 - correct, if headphones work fine, then its the jack that is deficient and tells your PB not to play from speakers. Happened to my iPAQ, Storm2...02-06-12 10:44 AMLike 0

- The recently purchased Playbook kit included 2 NX Stylus, with padded tip, for use on the Playbook screen. The short one (about 5 cm) comes with a string attached to a plastic 'dowel', tapered to fit into the headphone hole for the 3,5mm headphone jack. It is suggested that the plastic dowel be placed into this hole for storage, to avoid losing or misplacing it; it fits perfectly. Since I didn't yet have headphones, and having got in the habit of using the longer stylus, I left the short one in this hole more or less permanently. After many days of frustration without sound from the speakers, I found that simply removing the plastic dowel solved the problem! Effect similar to a defective headphone jack?!? Tech personnel were baffled, and so was I. Hope this solves the mystery for others.12-14-12 02:11 PMLike 0

Indeed there is a physical button within the jack that switches the sound between the headphone jack and the speakers. You can try by inserting anything thin into the jack. (Just make sure it's not something that is going to break off inside! You can try the skinny plastic piece of the inside of a pen. )
The same thing applies to a headphone jack for laptops.
To the OP, if the issue reoccurs and you still have warranty, you might want to RMA it and describe the issue to them. The button inside the jack might have a loose spring or might break soon so better to get it fixed now rather than have your warranty expire.12-16-12 08:51 PMLike 0 - i have the same problem and i have wiped it and re-updated the 2.1 version but the speakers still wont work.the headphones work perfectly fine though.
please help me ASAP.04-06-13 05:30 AMLike 0 - Plug headphones in/out and repeat a number of times and see if that fixes the problem.
The PB has a one year warranty to the original purchaser. It also has 90 free Tech support. I do not know how Rim deals with "quasi-tech support v. warranty"
