Can I install Ubuntu Touch on PlayBook?
So, BlackBerry has officially screwed the PlayBook and its loyal users, and left it completely to die its own painful death. Its been already confirmed that there won't be even 2.1 or 2.2 update for PB. That's a shame, but they are shameless people. Let's not get into this debate. Time to move on!
I was thinking about last wish of PlayBook. I know that BlackBerry is not even going to hear this word "PlayBook", I think PB will also disappear from their sites, blogs, etc. soon. So, why not for the last time ever do something for PB users, which won't break their bank and PB owners will have something to rejoice at last. Lets get to the point.
I hope you have seen/heard about Ubuntu Touch. Its a promising new OS from original Ubuntu maker company. Few months ago, they gave images for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 devices to run the OS. So, I was thinking about something and then I saw this list:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/TabletList
You can see in the OMAP 4 section, the only tablet which is not supported yet is our very own PlayBook, because its bootloader is locked. Now, I would love to install Ubuntu Touch on my PlayBook or even Android or other new mobile OSes if the bootloader gets unlocked. If BlackBerry has any respect left for PB owners, they can release a small utility / patch to just unlock the bootloader and then we can make some use of this device which is about to become a door stopper with its current state. Obviously, this will be fully optional, so those of you who want to stick with the current PlayBook OS, they are free to do so.
What do you guys think? Don't you think BlackBerry owe us at least this much? BB10 may be was too much for PlayBook (which I still don't agree with), but Ubuntu Touch will run buttery smooth on PlayBook's hardware.
