Blackberry Playbook Upgraded to Windows 8
Hello,
I am new here and I have a simple question.
When Windows 8 comes out can I upgrade my tablet to it? Also if I don't like Windows 8 did there a way to go backwards to the Blackberry OS?
Thanks! - 04-10-2012, 12:12 PM #2
It is not possible. The Playbook has a locked bootloader, so it cannot run any OS beside one provided by RIM.
You would need to buy a Windows 8 tablet.Last edited by lak611; 04-10-2012 at 12:20 PM. Reason: typo

Like lak611 said it's not possible to load Windows 8 or any other OS on your PlayBook.

Root the device. And no you can't unlock the bootloader by rooting it.

Short answer: NO
Even Shorter answer: N
Also in response to your hypothetical question I have another hypothetical question. What on earth makes you think Windows 8 is an upgrade over OS2/ device agnosticism or bust!

You would actually have to end up rooting the device and changing the boot system. In all likeness its impossible.

I think the dumbest part of the OP's question is also the one that seems overlooked...Windows 8 considered an upgrade???

Windows on Arm will only be released to manufacturers to install onto their devices, hence the built in re-install that does not use installation media.
Even if there was a way to unlock the PlayBook's bootloader to run a different OS, you may not be able to get Windows 8 on it.Blackberry 10 > Windows Phone 7/8 > Blackberry 7 > iOS > Android > Symbian > WebOS > Meego - 04-12-2012, 01:16 AM #14
I think the title needs to be reworded into a question. Mods, please?

Yes I agree about the retitling.
Everywhere else in the world, moving from a minority and stagnating OS to a rich and consistently developed OS is considered an upgrade.
It is exclusively on Crackberry, and on Crackberry exclusively on the playbook forums part, that ANY sentence of common sense is denied. - 04-12-2012, 02:57 AM #16
Oh? How many Metro applications are there versus PlayBook applications? You could only hypothetically run the ARM version of Windows 8, which is not the "rich and consistently developed OS" that Windows on x86 is.
In fact, Windows on ARM is completely unproven and could fail worse than WebOS or Kin. No one outside of Microsoft or key manufacturers have even SEEN Windows on ARM. Everyone so far has been using Windows 8 on their current computers, and they are happy because they have access to all of their original applications. So just because Windows on ARM will be incompatible with all current Windows apps, that does NOT mean that developers are all going to go through the process of rebuilding their applications to run on Metro. In fact, it is very possible that application development will not exceed PlayBook/BB10's, let alone Android or iOS.Last edited by grahamf; 04-12-2012 at 03:14 AM.
