so a dell rep. came by work today and handed out some flyers with a qr code promo to win a new dell notebook. It was a little blurrier of a copy of the qr and both my 9930 and playbook could not scan it. Another associate pulled out her iphone and scanned it in a heartbeat. Im not happy about this. Why couldnt BOTH of my devices do this???? Used "QR Scanner" and "QRCoder" on playbook and used the appworld scanner on my 9930.....

Not really surprised since neither of those devices have AutoFocus. Still, the 9900 does have decent ability to focus on text at short ranges. A little surprised on that one, I guess. The Playbook? Wow. I absolutely hate it for close up pictures.

Probably badly written code for the apps you used. I doubt this has anything to do with the devices in question.

Edit: The above comment also makes sense though.

QR codes are as about as functional as jean shorts and phone holsters. I highy doubt you are going to win the notebook anyways.

i dont really care that i cant scan it.....chances of winning are slim to none.....im more upset that the iphone was able to do it (and quickly at that)! Either way, still LOVE both the 9930 and my playbook!

This was the problem. You'd get it to scan eventually, but AF makes it a heck of a lot easier to.

i thought PB had autofocus? my pics are crystal-clear.....

nonetheless, it is terrible that there is no 2d barcode reader by default on RIM's devices.... utter non-sense...

The OP's scenario seems like a nightly low threshold for "embarrassment."

No, the PB does not have AutoFocus. Try to take a picture of text from 6" away. Its unreadable on the PB. I wish this was not the case. The 9900 does well enough on its "Close Up" macro mode or whatever. I can't wait for the PB to get some upgraded camera software.

i dont get this, iPhone packs a 8mp w autofocus and the 9900, a thicker phone, does not at 5mp....

QR Codes will be a thing of the past once NFC gains popularity.

You could've typed out the actual URL using the brilliant keyboard of the 9930/9900 faster than it took your iPhone friend to take the pic!!

I have the 9800 paired with the pb

I varied the size of a QR code and when it's small the pb won't read it but my 9800 will.
The 9800 can take good close-ups, the pb can't....yet (OS2?)

Embarrassed? Do you embarrass easily? AF really helps for reading QR codes. I have it on my BB for that but i virtually never use it. Would like a nicer camera on PB but it is not critical for me; the 9780 camera is more than sufficient for me.

To avoid the embarrassment, take picture with playbook first in front of people. When no one is around, try to scan it with bb

I have a similar story just opposite with a cheaper device
this happened in a few weeks ago.
my friend could not scan a Qr code at all with his iphone 4s
and his girl pulls out her curve 8530 and scans it in 2 seconds lol.
I think some people are better then others at scanning those things
so its not really much the phone, but the user.

if true, which i highly doubt, it would have takin 20 seconds on the curve. stories man. stories.
Yep, not true....my Curve 8330 scans in less then a second.
