Word Substitution mystery?
I have had a pb since late aug, and word substitution never worked, not even in bbm or messages. nor did the double space period. now it does (thank God) but only in bbm and messages. i know a lot of people have said they hoped this would be in 2.0, so i searched for this and found posts from june or july saying it worked then. i cant pinpoint mine to a day, but the only recent change is 3312 update.
sure, i wish it worked in all apps, but bbm and messages is a good start for me.
so, has it been there for months but i didnt somehow have it turned on? does it matter what bbos you are bridged to? is it working for everyone now? if there is a secret to this that we can share, it might save some frustration. - 10-11-2011, 12:19 AM #3
its always worked in bridged apps for me. It pulls the info right from the phone as far as I know. I think it also works in docs.
Would be nice to have it working properly across the board though

word substitution and double space period does work for me now in messages and bbm. have tested it numerous times and on several of my email accts. still doesnt work anywhere else (including CB). its amazing how a simple thing like this can make me so happy. i am connected to a 9930, but have not changed bbos, and updated bridge when that came out weeks ago.

I _THINK_ it only works on Rim's pre-defined words. I have defined some autotext entries and they do NOT work on my pb.

F2 - I have several custom adds (otb = okay thanks bye) that are working, as well as the stock list.
The point of my thread was for us all to figure out why it works for some and not others, so it can work for all. before next spring when 2.0 shows up. i hope we can do that. - 10-11-2011, 02:01 AM #8
In this day and age where everyone is typing in abbreviated text speak, who cares about word substitution and spell check?

Ahhh... sorry, my mistake. It was early.

I read "word substitution" and my brain heard "spelling substitution". Spelling suggestion isn't on the PB yet... the PB underlines the mis-spelt word in red, but that's as far as it goes.
Word substitution does seem to work on the PB though seems over-agressive - it won't let me correct its substitute word if I disagree with it and keeps changing it back to what it wants... but maybe that's just me?
So yes. The PB will indeed change "RIM wont announce a date for OS2" to "won't" and "Im tired of waiting for RIM to finish the software" to "I'm". - 10-11-2011, 05:33 AM #10

Most people underestimate the power of word substitution and under-utilize it. Their loss.
The last time I checked, auto-text wasn't working quite right in Bridge apps. On the BB, either a space or a punctuation mark (i.e., a non-alphanumeric character) would trigger a substitution. On the PB in Bridge, only the space does it; punctuation doesn't.
I'd verify this now, but I don't have the PB with me. It may have been fixed in the last update (doubtful, but you never know).
This glitch is interesting, because it suggests that the actual algorithm for doing the substitutions is in the Bridge software somewhere, either on the PB or in the BB app. It's not using the native BB code, or there would be no difference. Since being able to use the regular PB browser when Bridged, I haven't used the Bridge browser. Maybe someone could check to see whether auto-text works in a web site in the Bridge browser. - 10-11-2011, 08:40 AM #12
On my bb phone, when I type "f" by itself and follow by a space, it types out my name. It does not work on the pb. I have some oddball ones for punctuation on the bb phone
v = ?
b = !
n = ,
None of those work either. As you may see, those letters, typed alone (followed by SPACE) turn into the bb phone's keyboard ALT character. I find it easier than pressing ALT to just enter space v space to get a ?
edited to add: this was just tested again in EMAIL and it did not work. - 10-11-2011, 07:50 PM

tried bridge browser but does same as regular browser. my bbm and messages work with default and custom word substitutions.
for what its worth, here is my info:
pb 64gb 3312 + sprint 9930 on 7.0.0.241, bridge app 1.0.6.5
doesnt seem to be much interest so this thread should go bye bye. - 10-11-2011, 07:56 PM #14
Thanks for trying it anywsy. I can confirm that the glitch of punctuation not triggering word substitution on PB as it does on BB is still present.
