RIM have enabled voice over wifi for BBM on OS 6 and 7 phones. Would it be possible on OS 2.1? That would be a nice gift for loyal Playbook owners who have suffered thru a lot to stay with Playbook.

I can see where the OP is going with this, especially with video chat already on the PlayBook, but it won't do much without BBM. And since the PB is already slated to get BB10 in the future, it's not like RIM is leaving it out or anything.

It looks like RIM is setting up BBM on BB10 to be the video chat app. I don't know if there is a forward facing camera on the BB10 phones we have seen, but I bet there will be. That would make BBM like Apple's face time with a lot more functionality.

The Dev Alpha has a front facing camera, so it is a safe bet that release devices will as well. Some of the BB10 slides also show BBM Video as a menu option, so it looks like it will be included in the release.

It has been known for a while that BBM will take over the capabilities of Video Chat.

If fact, while it was not possible to ring a smartphone's PIN before, I managed to ring my Bold after BBM Voice (that is, the PlayBook made the call, but since BBM and Video Chat can't interface, the Bold didn't notice anything going on - but it is good indication that it is all happening on the same platform/server).

Throsten already confirmed BBM video is coming for BlackBerry 10 at the Annual General Meeting for RIM in July. (it slipped but most people caught it , i was there in person).

BBM Video is coming...when BBM is coming for PlayBook... which is when BB10 is available for PlayBook... which is in 2013.

No point of rim wasting resources making BBM for PlayBook when theres already one for BB10 which PB will upgrade to.
