After a week of playing with the Playbook, here are the reasons why I am returning it.

I own a torch on ATT 526.

1. Initially, I had a problem with bridging my Blackberry Torch to the Playbook, but after turning off all the settings except Data, I was finally able to get this to work, 5 days into ownership. This left a bad taste in my mouth, the same bad taste when I got the Torch on the first day and I wasnt able to search within the body of any of my emails. Rendering it useless for business.

2. The Playbook is a great device, but I am not sure on the multitasking. For example, I am happy that I can log into flash sites such as Sirius XM and have it play, but is it really multitasking? Changing the app to something else or even opening a new browser window stops the original window from playing. Are you able to keep the SIRIUS XM player playing in window with FLASH while opening another browser window?

3. Probably the biggest disappointment is the bridge browser. I wasnt expecting much, but give me at least 56.5 k speeds. I mean, this thing is totally useless. 90% of the time, it wants to save a page to a file?? and the other times, I have to click like 20 times to get a page to load, and when it loads, it takes 8 mins to load a non intensive web page. Its not the carrier, as if I move to the web browser on the Torch, it is almost instant. I dont see any reason to carry this device when I can easily carry my Ipad 2 3g instead, the speed is insane, I can stream netflix app on the Ipad 2 on 3g.

4. Little things irk me, for example, things like when I am browsing on a web page, I have to scroll down and I constantly open ads in new windows. I see other people complaining about this also, but the overall feel is that this thing is unpolished and unfinished. ALso, if you ever touched an Ipad, when you browse a web site, it is very smooth. Up down, in between, scrolling, etc. I found it kinda difficult to even move a page down, which ruins the whole experience. I do like the form factor of this unit, it is quite small and light.

5. Why did Rim not package a more powerful charger with this, why are they juicing me when I paid a premium for this unit already. Not being a fanboi, but apple packaged a more power 1amp charger with Ipads (not the same as Iphone 3 or iphone 4s), - I mean, come on, show some loyalty to your Blackberry Followers.

6. The bridge was nice, but the inability to close off the left pane and to give a little more function with the playbook layout was a disappointment. My torch is on the nightstand, it is faster to read the email on the playbook, and to grab the torch, and type up a response on a real keyboard. What is the point of the bridge. It is nice, but they should have given SOME SORT OF ENHANCEMENT? Anything, at the very least, give me some visual effects, you are controlling the data right RIM? I know you are because you have a preview pane on the left and the actual email on the right, so you could have done anything with the data. Also, the SEARCH does NOT work, it went on and on and on and on. It seems broken. You could have done so much more with the Bridge RIM, it would have been a keeper! The Bridge experience could have been SO MUCH MORE, the possibilities are endless.

7. Dont flame me on this, I know this is just the beginning. But with this machine, the app store is a joke. It seems like all the apps could have been written by anyone taking a computer BASIC programming class. It seems it is flooded with stuff that no one wants, with inferior quality and doesnt even take advantage of the processor or graphics. It seems everyone developing apps just wanted a free playbook. Dont believe me? Download a few apps, these apps are on the quality of 2003 era Smartphone. The app store seems weirdly laid out, I dont what it is, but it just seems very strange. They should have some sort of quality control and should have kept some of these apps out, rather than just filling it with junk.


So I had to ask myself, do I want to continue to use this (nice small form factor) with an inferior browsing experience, which I mostly use my tablets for, the inability to browse web pages when out on the go, and a bridge to my blackberry which seemed like a great great idea and was a selling point to me, but seems like it could have been so much more. Imagine a bridge where emails are expanded in groups, grouped by titles, etc, you could have done so much more with the data and then I would have kept the torch holstered.

But the answer is no, I will be taking my Ipad 3g with me when I am out on the go and when I need something quick to refer to at home.

Right now, the playbook does not offer me anything "extra" that I can justify having it for. I guess, if it was my ONLY tablet, it may be a keeper, but I have seen so much more.

I can tell that you put effort into this, really I do, but do we really need a new thread every single time someone is going to return their PlayBook? I get that everyone feels like a special little snowflake that needs to have their opinion heard but, honestly, after seeing the 387th (made up exaggerated number for emphasis) "I'm returning my PlayBook" thread, it gets really old, especially when it's the same thing every time.

Instead if voicing your dissatisfaction to us, which have no inside influence into the production of the product, send an email to RIM and tell them about it because the best you'll get here is a spin on "Don't let the door hit you on the way out".

well i wass gonna point out all the flaws in your report.. such as the multi-tasking (you should check your settings) but it seems like you didnt do as much investigating in your playbook as you did complain

I see from reading this post you do not take the time to know how to operate your device. I wonder how many ppl took their computers back because they didn't know how to open the preference to setup their network or clock at home?....lol

Setting up the bridge can be a challenge for those who don't deal with connectivity on daily basis so a reboot of both devices will eliminate many issues before doing any pairing to two devices.

There is a setting that is called "SHOWCASE" that turns on the full power of the device for TRUE MULTITASKING...Read the manual and dig deeper and you would have seen it and iTrash doesn't even have this feature even after its been hacked/jailbroken...

Bridgebrowser is a new connectivity feature so it got its quirks but the iStone and iTrash doesn't even talk to each other so you need two contracts to get wireless service...sheesh

Opening ads in a new window is really an irk? Do you complain that sun shines more on one side of the house too.....come on now...every home browser are using Tabs more so why can't you ...

I agree with the charger....but i see their point.... The battery life is much longer so they assumed that less charging would be needed but faster is charging would be better...

The bridge is new and still growing but the closing of the left pane is there...I uses it and it could be you may have needed to do a reset so the OS could sit into your device fully like other pc's when installing something new....also its possibly not fully open yet for some reason or another

If its new then how can you complain or compare when anything from Apple is built on top of the iPod format so it has years of building and to be honest...When the iStone came out...it didn't have apps for a year so atleast they are way ahead of that curve for a new device.

RIM has always been about its security and so have apple until they entered the smartphone era and to stay ahead of the android with apps using open-source software. RIM will be security first then software and we true fans love it. No hack/jailbreak for us and our personal business is secure from being tracked.

I love my PB and the power it processes with the likes of TAT and their Scrape Book software shows what real power can do.....

I wish you took more time with it and really gotten to know it better and see for yourself what the true platform of a tablet is to be like....RIM devised the BLUEPRINT for tablets while the others just showoff apps that those tablets couldn't do natively

Also, I have been working with computers Since Apple IIs, and the original macs, assigning the first laser printer on a network to a mac, worked with OS2, PCs and Netware.. I used to work with Token Ring networks, so thats how far I go back. I am also an programmer, and a 12volt car specialist. Dont speak to me about connectivity.

Not a complaint, but can you tell me WHY it is glowing red when I have one NON FLASH Browser window open?

Bridge also knocked out my torch a few times, preventing keypresses, not until I turned off the Playbook did function return to my torch. 526.

I recall reading a post claiming that the poster was sick of reading other posts "bashing" the PB without even having used the device. It appears that some don't like negative opinions expressed by anybody.

I agree that clogging the forum with "I'am returing it" threads would get tedious. However, this is a opinion from a BB smartphone users who bought the PB but decided that the iPad worked better. He is neither a troll or an Apple "fanboi". If he was he would be using an iPhone.

I this quote where do i speak on speed??? I said it has its quirk but atleast it BRIDGING gaps between its phone and tablets....Apple iTrash is in its second year and still no CONNECTIVITY between its devices....are you really???

Name ONE device on its first build get it right and then reply back.... Like i have said before Apple been leading the way with half-baked devices and covers it up with cologne ooops apps. iStone 1, 2, 3 and then 4 is when a part time multitask showed up on their device. iTrash 1 and now 2 and still no true multitasking i guess you will wait and buy on the 4th gen to have it huh?

If your going to complain for Tabs then just ask for better option to disable it. Everything the playbook does is about the future and moving forward in native hardware so when apps arrive...iTS ABOVE AND BEYOND....rotflmbo

I hesitate to enter the fray on this post almost as much as i regret to dignify it with an answer, but the statement that the PB doesnt multitask couldnt be left to stand.

Anyone that thinks minimizing an app causes it to pause is uninformed or willfully misrepresenting the power of the device. It is true that the default is to paused minimized apps, this option iseasi,y changed in the general settings. Switching to SHOWCASE in the APP BEHVIOR setting will result in all the multitasking your heart desires.

i have used this setting to recreate the demo video we saw from RIM where you can output a video to the hdmi, while playing a game on the internal screen.

While there are a number of legitimate issues to seek fixes from RIM, lets remain focused on the actual problems, rather than create straw-men that detract from the real issues.

Not sure why everyone is pissed off at DaNomadicOne's post - it's very fair to say that if one compares the Playbook to an iPad (either the original or the new one), the iPad is clearly a more mature/polished device.

That plus the very obviously inadequate applications available to date makes the Playbook very questionable AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME.

The physical device itself seems very polished (except for the power switch), and the form factor is really sweet. But the immaturity of the software and available 3rd party apps makes it really really hard to love the Playbook.

It's quite likely I will be returning my Playbook this weekend (thank you BestBuy for your no restocking fee policy).

...BUT...I can easily see myself buying again some time later this year once the kinks are worked out, the various glitches are fixed, and Android and native PB apps of sufficient quality and functionality are available.

Until then, I have to say that there just isn't enough there to warrant a $499 price tag for the entry level model.

Also iTrash may appear to be polished BUT its the same platform since the iPod. iStone is a iPod with a touchscreen and radio signal so its been around for awhile but it just lagging everywhere outside of apps.

If you take away apps from every platform since the PB has none....What can these devices do and offer to the users? This is what makes the device unique because you can add apps anytime. I know the consumer world seeks apps but we are talking devices. If the apps are not native then the device is nothing without 3rd parties.

The search function works fine - as well as it does for your Torch. Perhaps the bad taste has jaded you.

in your settings simply select the "general" option and in "application behavior", choose "showcase" from the drop down menu. All your apps will continue to run in the background.

If you want to tether for free, then surely, you're going to be disappointed. However, if you want full functionality simply change your carrier plan to include tethering and watch how fast your speed increases.

The new tab thing is indeed a miss for the PlayBook but if you're bringing up the iPad in comparison and that disadvantage for you is more important than not being able to view full flash enabled sites, then WOW !!!

You are sadly mistaken on this. The Playbook charger packs 1.8 amps.

This is a repeat of prior points but in the title of this thread, you did mention that you're keeping an iPad over the PlayBook. However, you do realize that in all of your criticism, the iPad doesn't even have a Bridge to begin with, right?

What apps do you do on your iPad with all of it's apps that you really can't do on the PlayBook? And if you expected the PlayBook to have as many apps as those already on iPad's second model, then that's your mistake.

That red glow in the corner indicates that you have email on your Torch. That's it. Just check your mail and it will go away. No stress.

Are you just making all of this up? Be honest. Either your making this up or you really have no business using a pb. Seriously my 8 year old figured out what the glowing red corner is on her own. She heard the alert go off on my phone. The same sound she knows plays whenever I get an email and she seen the corner and instantly knew why it was there. She even handed me back my pb and told me I had a new email.

Seriously didn't it seem weird that the red glowing started whenever your phone got an email? You really couldn't figure that out on your own? Or have you just never even used a PB and your just repeating stuff you read on the interweb?

No offense, but I hope for your sake you were kidding about the red corner. If you weren't then you really should stick with the iPad.

Give the guy a break....many true points.

I really want the playbook to work like it should (and how Rim wanted it to work), but it has to go back for many of the reasons stated.
The situation kinda reminds me of when I picked up the first Storm, it could have been great, but Rim just seems to have a hard time getting it right (even close) the first time.
Was at a get together this weekend, a Rim employee was there, we had an interesting discussion, she said that the playbook is good for beta testers, said to wait for the second version.....this from an employee.
My kids really like it, but as a business tool it just doesn't cut it for me.

As a shareholder of Rim, it worries me that in the weeks to come this is going to be considered a serious failure and I will be losing more than my playbook.

I don't think the OP should be flamed for this post. Sheesh, I mean clearly he tried the device because I can relate to nearly ALL of his points. I'm by no means a technical guru when it comes to wireless connectivity between devices but I have managed to work through the kinks slowly by experimenting and carefully following the forums this week. This is a pretty decent sounding off post and it presented an excellent opportunity for the members to offer solutions. Even if the OP isn't particularly interested, there are a lot of people out there still struggling with these issues and others who are sitting on the fence wondering if this device is riddled with problems. If we can offer up solutions instead of flames I think we'll all be better off in the long run.

Clearly the PlayBook has issues that need to be fixed in a hurry and some that shouldn't have been a problem in the first place. But as I've illustrated above, most of the problems identified by the OP are simply inaccurate as he doesn't know how to use basic functions.

I can especially relate to the OP's points about the bridge. He didn't enjoy the browser, but I gather no one is. In fact...I challenge someone to make 10 useful posts in 10 different threads in the Playbook forum in the next hour!

However, don't overlook the positive comment the OP made about the bridge, and he's right, the bridge is a keeper, and hopefully more functionality will be built into it fairly soon because I love the symbiotic relationship between my Playbook and Torch. But I personally think the OP torpedoed the WRONG device! I think the Torch is the culprit that undermines the bridge, most notably the Torch browser.

Right now I am trying to "browse" the Yahoo site with the bridge browser. I am having some success. I gave up tapping the links and just press and hold until the menu pops up, then I select "open link" and if the Torch's browser is in the mood then by gosh it opens!

And that matters why? Isn't direct communication with the creator of the product ALWAYS better if you are trying to figure something out then to ask a forum/tell a forum about your product being returned.

Forums are a great resource. I wouldn't know how to do a full 12,000 mile service on Hummer if it wasn't for a certain forum that I belong to but I don't care AM General monitors it. Sure if there was a direct problem that the manufacturer needs to know about I would contact them and not relying on HOPING the manufacture reads my post on a web forum.

Of course we are comparing 2 very different things. RIM sold 4 times as many playbooks in 1 day than AM General sold Hummers in 14 years but seriously I can not imagine the amount of times this forums gets a new post about the same thing in 1 day. I thought the Staples threads before release were bad.

You stated that you can relate to "can relate to nearly ALL of his points" - and you capitalized the word "all". I countered most of those points showing how they are inaccurate. I also indicated that the Bridge Browser works fine. The reason he's having trouble is because his carrier is having issues with the tethering issue.

Switching to SHOWCASE in the APP BEHVIOR setting will result in all the multitasking your heart desires.issues.

Can someone please explain what true life need( or desire) is filled with the showcase feature? *I might be missing something but i cant see how having thumbnail windows actively playing serves any need because they are too tiny to read, watch or do anything in. *If you could do a splitscreen with two web pages open that would fill a need but i understand the playbook can only have one page running. *As far as presentation mode, the ipad can easily project a video to tv while multitasking other things on the ipad at the same time.

It is almost like they put showcase in just as a sales tool for demos.

If the webpage has embedded audio playing (internet radio/flash video etc.), you can listen to it while working in another app.

If there is one truth to these forums, it is that when someone says "I'm returning my Playbook because...etc. etc. etc" , it usually means they are returning their Playbook. And, they probably never revisit this forum to read all the lovely flames they've received, so I'd say don't bother.
