Where are the apps?
Since cascades was made available to developers about a week ago, how come there aren't any new Cascade apps for playbook?
Not even one Cascade app was created for the playbook after BB World.
*Also, where is that Kindle App? I have been waiting for almost a year. (no side-load)
This is just ridiculous. Not even an Android app. Psshh. - 05-09-2012, 08:49 PM #2
Cascades is not part of the PlayBook OS 2.0. When PlayBook receives BB10 you will be able to run apps using Cascades.
As for Kindle you might want to look in the Android side loading forum. It was converted the first day.Wallpaper Changer HD for BB10 A MUST HAVE APP - Automatically rotates your wallpaper - Now with battery % meter, weather and more!

That is a RIM app, and they can do things regular devs can't like include libraries. The DJ app does this too I believe. But for 99.999% of the devs out there, we can't do that.

A week? You're upset that developers haven't completely recoded their apps on a brand new framework nobody knew anything about prior in one week? I suppose I should be gratified that you think we software developers are that smart or efficient!

Hey it's no one's fault but yours if you insist on a specific reading app. There are several native apps available, if you insist on using a specific one you have two options try and talk the manufacturer into producing one or use another platform.

There was one guest with Thornsten at BBW who stated that it took them all of one or two days to convert an app using cascades. I forget which app it was. But yes, I too expected to see some cascades apps start trickling out.
If some libraries are only available to RIM how did those demo apps use them? RIM is in no position to restrict access to those libraries. You'd think that they'd want to encourage devs to crank out those cascades apps now. If they're really waiting for BB10 to come to the PB, which I understand will be about 6 months after BB10 phones are released, then its going to be a long uphill climb for the PB and by that time they'll be competing with perhaps the iPad 4 with a superior OS and again, playing catch-up.
Maybe 1 week is kind of quick but I was certainly expecting to see some cascades implementations sooner rather than later. Heck, they spent a lot of energy bragging about how easy and quick it is to develop on this platform!Last edited by dynot; 05-09-2012 at 09:48 PM.

You can Sideload Kindle app
Had this on my Playbook since December works great on the PB.
As far as cascades you're really gonna have to be patient.
We will have them soon enough.Watch Hulu and Netflix on the Playbook

Because select few partners were given the BETA (Pay attention to that word) NDK a week or 2 before everyone else.
BETA - as in not ready for general use, it was released so devs can get their apps ready for BB10. There are bugs with it, and new things will be add/changed.
Not sure where you heard 6 months after the phones for PB to get BB10....Wallpaper Changer HD for BB10 A MUST HAVE APP - Automatically rotates your wallpaper - Now with battery % meter, weather and more!

No ones in a hurry you see?
What's the matter? Why don't you just side-load? Even though I don't think it's the best way to obtain an app.. It's your only way now and why not if you have been waiting for over a year? Wonder why?
And Cascades, HTML5, Air all are going to be mixed up to make apps..
You know we are expecting Super-Apps! Not Kindle! - 05-10-2012, 06:05 AM #18
That would just solve the problem.. but that's not what we're here for..

I read it in a post on these forums. Wasn't sure if it was fact or not but haven't heard anything else about when it would come out on the PB. Except that it would be updated to 2.1.
What I don't understand is why we have a scrapbook app used by a minimum number of owners (maybe 20% at best) developed with Cascades and a browser which is probably used by the majority of users (over 90%???) developed with AIR. Why not get maximum impact by using Cascades to upgrade the browser. I know you say its a beta but I assume the same beta was used to create scrapbook and the calculator and they look pretty neat.
Don't mean to be argumentative here but some things just don't make sense to me and I'm just venting!

This is just a rumor but I think we may have a cascades built browser with 2.1
Also in 2.1 Android will have multi tasking capabilities and probably bumped up from 2.3
This will give android apps a much better feel along with performance boost.
I imagine Kindle and other android apps will feel a bit closer to Native with this so don't fret your little heart.
A dev beta of 2.1 could be released as soon as the end of the month so just be patient.
The playbook is getting ready to get a lot better even without BlackBerry10.

Actually its very doubtful that the current browser will stick around.
Michael Clewely himself stated in a tweet that they will not be working on the current browser anymore. The current browser is built with air fyi.
The plan is to scrap the current browser for something much better and while he didn't outright say the new one is being built with cascades, he did hint to it playfully in a tweet.
One of the reasons you don't see bookmark management and other customization with the current browser is because they are done building on it. It was a temporary solution to build it using air until cascades was further along.
