It doesn't seem it uses anything like synch otherwise I wouldn't get emails and notifications this fast.

So anyone know how bridge works? I think if developed well, this could be RIM's future...

i would think since bridge just reads whats on the phone, and the phone uses push, by extension, the playbook is just getting the email pushed to the phone

i hope email on the pb is push once they get the PIM on it

I believe the process is called "data mirroring". The PB simply mirrors what's on the BB. I would imagine the Bridge apps on the PB listen for notifications, then echo them. It's possible the BB-side app could also push, too, not sure.
