Can anyone tell me if the preview pane can be disabled in the PB email?

The square with two arrows at top right will give you full screen. The two arrows above the trash can(bottom right) will allow you to scroll through emails.

I think the OP wants to only show the email headers, and not show the contents of the email unless it is opened. Ie hide the preview pane.
I don't know a way of doing that, but I've not had PlayBook long...

If you rotate to portrait mode, you only see either header or message, not both. This may not completely be he solution you seek, but it works.

Yes that was the question. On Windows I like to have the email client set that way. It avoids jpgs and other files from automatically opening and possible virus infectation/phishing occuring. Not sure if there are any instances of virus/phishing attacks on PB. But it still bothers me to see email automatically open.
