Portrait email in os 2.1
I just saw news on the web that RIM would make OS 2.1 available in the summer. I think that's great news and more generally I am optimistic because RIM seem intently focused on the OS for the future phones, and playbook users will benefit from it.
However, knowing that with RIM you can always expect surprises, I got a bit suspicious by seeing that "portrait email" is listed as one of the main features of OS 2.1. Portrait email... is that even an operating system feature ?
Please relieve me of a horrible doubt : they wouldn't by chance have removed portrait email purposely from the last two updates, in order to make OS 2.1 more interesting ?
No they would never have done that. Would they ? - 05-02-2012, 07:02 AM #3
yea they did it.. they also had a cd player which they removed only to bring it back wid os2.1

My source is this article on Berryreview.
The presence of "portrait Email..." among deeper OS novelties seems to me a bit like those children games where you have to find the intruder in an image.
I would have better understood if os-wide portrait mode had not been available from the start, and relatively easy to code for developers who wanted to.Thanked by:BerryClever (05-02-2012)

Please relieve me of a horrible doubt: you have a history of starting somewhat trollish threads and this seems to be another one.
No you would never have done that. Would you? - 05-02-2012, 11:16 PM #9
I am mixed about BerryReview, but if this is the case, there are some good stuff coming to 2.1. I doubt that will be it though, there should be more, especially since it is coming in a few months (if true).
The native Browser app is great, but I would image that will be getting a much needed bookmark manager. I think there will be some other large 'tweaks' like that (along with the above mentioned portrait email) with 2.1. PlayBook is getting better all the time! And now after seeing the new BB10 phones, I will be holding off on getting a Bold until those are released (will be my first BB phone, so I figure I will get the best).

which one will come out first, OS 2.1 or playbook 4G?

Eventually, the long laundry list of bugs will be fixed (probably in BB10). The reason that the bookmarks issue has not been addressed yet is because the browser itself is native code, but it's 'skin' (ie pulldown settings menu, tab controller, bookmarks, history, and more) are written in Adobe Air and not in native code with the Cascades UI. It makes no sense to take the time to develop these if they are only 'placeholders'.
The same is true for the picture viewer, video player, podcast app, and many more. As the OS matures, these features will become native and, therefore, more feature rich and working the way they should. Why is it that when your contract commitment is up, the phone you always wanted is now old and the phone you now want won't be out until the next quarter?

But why don't they release portrait email immediately ? It's not like it's technically bundled with "android multi-tasking" or something kernel-level...

whether he did or not, it's still a very relevant point is it not?
A machine that can go portrait has built in vendor supplied apps that can't go portrait.
amazingly poor.
For me it was no big deal, I'm happy with it as it is, but it does reflect on how poor BB was in this instance.

Yes but we were talking about native email.
And no it is not that useful at all. You don't see why you would use your thumbs to type message quickly on a 7" tablet while in transports.
Personal attacks, off-topic replies and technically irrelevant comments. Nothing to explain why portrait mode is not enabled now. The same fanboys are going to scream a high-pitched teenage haka when portrait mode is released : "Yay Yay Yay, We are badass, We are badass, We have the portrait email that nobody has..."

No, you have it the other way around.
Nothing to explain why RIM would be capable of making portrait mode from the beginning --- when they are 10 months behind the schedule of releasing the playbook in April 2011 and native email in February 2012.
If it was so easy to make a native email client --- they wouldn't have been 10 months late. - 05-03-2012, 11:02 AM

It has to be a useful portrait mode --- not just portrait mode for portrait mode sake. Most of these apps don't really work well in portrait mode --- UI not optimized, lots of white spaces. You might as well not have a portrait mode and concentrate on adding new features to your app.
Why would RIM use open source email clients that have unknown origins with unknown patent risks that can't be certified by governments?
