Lightbulb Playbook with update for disaster plan

Today and tomorrow, my Playbook could be put to a real test. With hurricane Irene barrelling up the coast, we're looking at very extreme weather conditions with the potential for damage and outages from wind, rain, and fallen tree limbs.

It occurred to me that since there's the possibility of loss of power and landline phone, I could be looking at a loss of communications.

In the event of such an outage, my plan B is to be able to use my Bold 9650. I have an extra battery that I've charged and is ready to go. My Bold and my Playbook are plugged in to their chargers.

With the most recent update, it occurred to me that as long as cell service is not disrupted, I can use my Bold for text messaging and email. But it also occurred to me that I can have full web access as well as access to my news apps on the Playbook via the bridge.

If we do have a power failure and lose land lines, it's nice to know that I still have a way to stay connected. This update couldn't have come at a more opportune time.
Why is it that when your contract commitment is up, the phone you always wanted is now old and the phone you now want won't be out until the next quarter?

Funny I just charged my 9810's spare battery and I'm charging my playbook now. I had the exact same thoughts of using my PlayBook for connectivity in case of a power outage.

It may be high time for my data plan dollars to earn her keep.

Exactly. BTW, I'm also keeping my laptop fully charged. It will be useless without wifi, but I can use it to charge my phone if both batteries die.

I am in Maryland and the use of the PB/Bold when electric goes out will come in handy to track the storm. Everything is plugged in and charging. Fingers crossed.

Good luck to everyone on the east coast. It's pouring furiously right now and this is just the outskirts of the hurricane. Lots of thunder and a literal wall of rain. The full brunt is not set to hit until around 8 hours from now. Fingers are crossed.

Suddenly, my concern about Android Player, Native PIM, etc. takes a back seat to the weather. Interesting how real life can put concerns into perspective. I'm hoping that everyone in potentially effected areas are safe and well. The trolling and complaining can resume once this has all passed. But for now, my thoughts are elsewhere.

I was also planning to use my new Bold 9930/PlayBook combo to track the storm and for communication. I don't have an extra 9930 battery but I can charge everything in my car if I have to, including my rechargeable lanterns. Living in CT, I can't believe we haven't bought a generator. We swear we're going to after every storm.

The problem I had in 2004 when we had 2 hurricanes back to back was the cell towers were one of the last to get power. Hopefully that's changed since people are using landlines less and less.

Glad this stuff doesn't happen in Melbourne AUS!

If the power goes out in your area, the cell towers may also. Do they have backups? I wonder...

That is why I believe, a 3G (or even 4G LTE) PlayBook version is really a must... you need another devices to make our PlayBook fully operational web-browser tablet... our PlayBook must be totally independent with other devices...

Yup, in the middle of Irene right now. Power is out. Using my bridged Playbook to track storm and stay connected. Joshua, that would require an additional data plan. The current solution is fine by me. VERY happy to have my Playbook right now.

But it's nice having options. It opens a door for new customers.
